1. Kovind sworn in as the 14th President

  • President Ram Nath Kovind was administered the oath of the office by the Chief Justice of India JS Khehar.
  • The President said that he feels privileged to walk in the same path as Dr.Radhakrishnan, Dr.Abdul Kalam and Pranab Mukherjee.
  • He created an account in Twitter and his first tweet said that he will carry out all his responsibilities with humility.

2. Drug peddlers coat eatables with LSD to avoid detection

  • To avoid being caught at airports, drug peddlers are coating biscuits and nut crackers with Lysergic acid diethylamide(LSD).
  • The Task Force officials were able to seize only because another drug was detected in the scanning machine.

3. Mumbai Education Society digitises 7 schools and colleges

  • In its first phase of digital transformation, the society digitised 7 schools and colleges.
  • Paperless admissions, biometric attendance for students, allowing parents to check child’s attendance on an app are the current features.
  • Online checking of exam papers is planned for the second phase.

4. Delhi’s Gole Market to house museum of culture and history

  • Gole Market near Connaught Place will be transformed into a museum by September 2018.
  • The museum will have four components- photo exhibition, documentaries, freedom movement, paintings and sculpture.

International News

1. UK to scrap homeopathy treatments

  • UK’s National Health Service has announced plans to stop doctors from prescribing homeopathic remedies.
  • This is aimed at saving 200 million pounds a year

2. Sweden mistakenly leaks personal data of almost all citizens

  • Sweden’s Transport Agency outsourced unencrypted data to IBM, which moved it to a cloud server.
  • This led to the leakage of private data of every citizen with license.

3. Not sure if 39 missing Indians are alive or not : Iraq

  • Iraqi’s Foreign Minister Ibrahim al-Jaafari has said his government is not 100% sure if all the missing Indians are alive or not.
  • ISIS abducted them in June 2014 after taking control of Mosul.

4. Iranian ambassador to remain in Kuwait despite orders

  • Iran denied that Kuwait had expelled its ambassador from the country.
  • The two countries have been involved in a row over Iran’s alleged links to a spy and terror cell.

Business News

1. ITC raises cigarette prices

  • ITC has raised prices of select cigarette brands to pass on the 6-7 per cent hike in the additional cess on cigarettes.
  • Brands like Classis, Gold Flake, Navy Cut will be costly.

2. Idea shares jump 7%

  • After the Competition Commission of India(CCI) approved Idea’s merge with Vodafone India, Idea’s shares jumped up by 7%.
  • The merger is a $23 billion deal and it will create the country’s largest telecom operator.
  • The merged entity will have 41% revenue market share.

3. Michael Kors to buy Jimmy Choo for over Rs.7500 crore

  • American brand Michael Kors is set to buy British label Jimmy Choo for $1.2 billion.
  • Jimmy Choo’s CEO Pierre Denis will remain in charge of the business.

4. Developers lose $4 billion a year

  • Mobile app developers across the globe lose a huge amount due to pirated app installs.
  • Developers download and deconstruct apps from Google Play and insert their own monetisation methodology.
  • When people install pirated apps, the money from ads shown is earned by the pirates.

1. Peaty sets record at World Aquatic Championship

  • Britain’s Adam Peaty broke his own world record for 50m breaststroke in 26.10 seconds.
  • He also won Gold in 100m breaststroke

2. Mithali Raj named skipper of ICC women’s cricket World Cup XI

  • Mithali Raj, whose inspired leadership helped India reach the final of the ICC Women’s Cricket World Cup, has been named skipper of the tournament XI announced yesterday
  • She will be gifted a BMW by Hyderabad businessman V Chamundeswarnath following the team’s performance in the Women’s World Cup.
