National & International Appointments
1. Tata Trusts Announces New CEO and COO
- Siddharth Sharma has been appointed as the CEO and Aparna Uppaluri as the COO of Tata Trusts.
- These appointments have been confirmed by Tata Trusts and will be effective from April 1, 2023.
- Upon N Srinath’s resignation as CEO in 2022, Siddharth Sharma took over the role. This is also the first-ever Chief Operating Officer position for Tata Trusts.
- Aparna Uppaluri has previously been associated with the Ford Foundation.
Science & Tech
2. NASA’s Nuclear-Powered Spacecraft Initiative
- By 2027, NASA aims to test nuclear-powered spacecraft, partnering with DARPA.
- The agency is also optimistic about sending humans to Mars by the late 2030s and plans to develop and showcase advanced nuclear thermal propulsion by 2027.
- Bill Nelson holds the position of NASA’s head.

3. Indian Air Force’s ‘PRALAY’ Exercise in the Northeast
- The IAF has decided to execute Exercise Pralay, incorporating all major air facilities in the northeast, including the newly placed drone squadrons, especially in light of the ongoing standoff with China.
- The drill will feature C-130J ‘Super Hercules’ planes, Chinook heavy-lift, and Apache attack helicopters.
- An activated S-400 air defence squadron by the IAF is prepared to counter any hostile aircraft or missile within a 400 km radius and beyond.
- This precedes the annual Air Force command-level exercise, “Eastern Akash,” scheduled for the initial week of February.
- Recently, the Indian Navy organized the large-scale amphibious exercise in 2023 near Kakinada, Andhra Pradesh.
- Exercise Cyclone-I, a first-time joint venture between the Indian Army’s special forces and the Egyptian Army, began in Jaisalmer, Rajasthan.
- The 21st naval exercise iteration between India and France began off the western coast.
- From January 16-26, 2019, the Hyakuri and Iruma air bases in Japan hosted the inaugural air joint exercise between the Indian Air Force and the Japanese Air Self Defence Force.
- The 125thAnnual India–Nepal Combined Military Exercise, Surya Kiran, commenced in Saljhandi, Nepal.

4. Voter’s Day Celebrations in India
- India celebrates Voter’s Day annually on January 25th, emphasizing the significance of voting.
- The 2023 theme for the event is “Nothing Like Voting, I Vote Every Time.”
- National Voters Day was first celebrated in 2011, intending to motivate young voters. The initiative was proposed by the law ministry and was endorsed by then Prime Minister Manmohan Singh.
5. Uttar Pradesh Foundation Day
- January 24th marks the annual celebration of the foundation day of Uttar Pradesh.
- Known as ‘Uttar Pradesh Day’, it has been observed yearly since 2018, initiated by Governor Ram Naik.
6. International Day of Education
- Celebrated annually on January 24th, the International Day of Education seeks to amplify support for education globally and ensure equality for its seekers.
- “Invest in People, Prioritize Education” is the theme for the 2023 Global Education Day.
- The UN General Assembly proclaimed December 3rd, 2018, as the inaugural International Education Day.
- For 2023, UNESCO announced that Afghan girls and women would be the primary focus for the International Day of Education.
- Meanwhile, India observes National Education Day annually on November 11th.
