  • On September 23, the Indian shoreline state of Goa was illuminated with its first-ever lighthouse festival. Orchestrated by the Union Ministry responsible for Ports, Shipping, and Waterways, the festival was launched to transform 75 lighthouses nationwide into major tourist attractions.
  • Spanning from September 23 to September 25, the event in Goa showcased the importance and rich heritage of lighthouses in India’s maritime history.

2. Majority of Indian Villages Achieve ODF Plus Recognition

  • Gajendra Singh Shekhawat, the Jal Shakti minister of India, acknowledged that 75% of the country’s villages, approximately 4.4 lakh, have reached the ‘Open Defecation Free Plus’ (ODF Plus) standard. This achievement paves the way for the Swachh Bharat Mission Gramin’s Phase 2 objectives for 2024-25.

  • October 8, 2023, will see the inauguration of the Swaminarayan Akshardham temple in Robbinsville Township, New Jersey. Under the spiritual guidance of Mahant Swami Maharaj, the temple is slated to be the world’s second-largest Hindu temple, following Cambodia’s Angkor Wat.
  • The temple stands as a testament to dedication, age-old traditions, and architectural prowess.
  • The New Jersey temple complex, measuring 255ft x 345ft x 191ft, includes one primary shrine, several sub-shrines, shikhars, and an elliptical dome of unparalleled stone craftsmanship.

1. Madhya Pradesh Welcomes its Seventh Tiger Reserve

  • Madhya Pradesh has introduced the Veerangana Durgavati Tiger Reserve, marking its seventh and India’s 54th tiger reserve.
  • Covering Sagar, Damoh, and Narsinghpur districts, the reserve spans 2,339 square kilometers. The reserve integrates regions within the Nauradehi and Durgavati Wildlife Sanctuaries. Efforts are underway to create a green corridor to connect the new reserve with the Panna Tiger Reserve.
  • Core and buffer zones have been delineated within the reserve. The 2022 tiger census showcased Madhya Pradesh’s growing tiger population, solidifying its status as the “tiger state”.

2. Goa’s Vision for Beach Tourism with a Revamped Shack Policy

  • Goa, a jewel on India’s western coastline, has endorsed the “Goa State Shack Policy 2023-2026”. This initiative aims to transform the beach landscape while ensuring sustainable tourism and local economic upliftment.
  • The new policy introduces seasonal beach structures, including shacks, deck beds, and umbrellas to enhance the visitor experience.

3. YUDH ABHYAS’ 19th Edition Set in Alaska

  • The joint military exercise between the Indian Army and the US Army, YUDH ABHYAS, will take place in Alaska, marking its 19th edition.
  • A 350-strong Indian Army battalion from the MARATHA Light Infantry Regiment will participate.
