National Appointments
1. Nasscom’s New Leadership for 2023-24
- Anant Maheshwari, currently the head of Microsoft India, has been inducted as the chairperson of Nasscom for 2023-24. Before this appointment, Maheshwari held the position of Nasscom’s vice-chairperson. He succeeds Krishnan Ramanujam, the leader of business and technology services at TCS.
- In addition, Rajesh Nambiar, who oversees Cognizant India as its chairman and managing director, is chosen as the vice-chairperson for the same term.
- For clarification, Nasscom stands for the National Association of Software and Service Companies.
International Updates
2. Operation Kaveri Initiated by India in Sudan
- Reacting to the evolving situation in Sudan, India initiated Operation Kaveri to safely repatriate its citizens from the troubled region. About 500 Indians have already been transported to Port Sudan.
- The operation utilizes two C-130s aircraft, with INS Sumedha on standby for assistance.
- “Kaveri” draws its name from one of India’s major rivers prevalent in the states of Karnataka and Tamil Nadu.
3. Current Situation in Sudan
- Sudan presently finds itself in a tussle involving the national military and a paramilitary faction. The conflict, spanning over ten days, has sadly taken the lives of more than 427 people, with 273 being civilians, and has left over 3,700 injured.
- However, a 72-hour ceasefire has been agreed upon, allowing Western, Arab, and Asian countries to evacuate their nationals.
- A considerable number of individuals, both from Sudan and nearby nations, have sought sanctuary in countries like Egypt, Chad, and South Sudan.

4. India Assists Mongolia in Refinery Development
- Dambajav Ganbold, Mongolia’s Ambassador to India, announced that with India’s support, Mongolia’s first-ever oil refinery is projected to become operational by 2025.
- The initial phase of the Mongol Oil Refinery will be financed through a soft loan from India, amounting to $1.2 billion.
- This project holds strategic importance as Mongolia currently depends entirely on Russia for energy supplies. When operational, the refinery is expected to cater to roughly 70% of Mongolia’s internal energy demands.

5. DRDO’s Human Capital Conference
- The Defence Institute of Psychological Research (DIPR), a DRDO affiliate laboratory in Delhi, is organizing a global conference titled ‘Optimising Human Capital of Armed Forces: Psychological Perspective’. The four-day event is slated to begin on April 25, 2023.
- The conference’s primary goal is to deliberate on the recent advancements, emerging trends, and challenges in psychology, specifically in relation to the human capital of global Armed Forces.
- Participants include representatives from the three Armed Services, other DRDO laboratories, and esteemed academicians.

6. Demise of Parkash Singh Badal
- Parkash Singh Badal, a key figure of the Shiromani Akali Dal and multiple-term Chief Minister of Punjab, has departed at 95 in Mohali, Punjab.
- He held the Chief Minister’s office on four distinct terms: 1977-1980, 1997-2002, 2007-2012, and 2012-2017. Beyond state politics, he briefly joined Morarji Desai’s central government as the Agriculture minister in 1977.
- In recognition of his distinguished service, he was awarded the Padma Vibhushan, the nation’s second-highest civilian honor, in 2015.
