1. Change in Leadership at China’s Central Bank

  • Pan Gongsheng has been confirmed as the new head of China’s central bank on July 25, succeeding the outgoing governor, Yi Gang. This significant shift was an expected move as part of the Communist Party’s decennial leadership change.
  • Previously serving as a deputy governor and having extensive experience in the state-owned banking sector, Pan replaces Yi Gang, a professional economist educated in the U.S.

2. MERS-CoV Emerges in UAE Again

  • The World Health Organization has reported a new case of MERS-CoV in a 28-year-old male resident of Al Ain city, Abu Dhabi. Notably, he had not traveled recently nor had any known interactions with camels or certain livestock, commonly associated with the virus.
  • Since its first emergence in the UAE in 2013, the nation has registered 94 cases and 12 fatalities. On a global scale, the number of MERS-CoV infections since 2012 stands at 2,605, with 936 deaths.

  • Nagaland has been formally identified as a state affected by Lumpy Skin Disease. This follows the detection of the ailment in four of the state’s districts.

  • The 2023 edition of Exercise Talisman Sabre, a major bilateral military drill involving Australia and the United States, has been inaugurated aboard the HMAS Canberra.
  • Marking its tenth iteration, this year’s exercise is the most expansive in both geographical coverage and participating nations. Over the coming fortnight, 13 countries will engage in extensive multi-domain military exercises spanning land, sea, air, cyber, and space.

5. IMF’s Positive Outlook on India’s Economy

  • The International Monetary Fund has revised upwards its GDP growth projection for India, now estimating a 6.1% expansion for the fiscal year.

Additionally, global growth prospects have been revised to 3% for 2023, buoyed by a diminishing likelihood of a U.S. recession and declining inflation rates.
