National & International Appointments

1. Government Announces Chief Justices for High Courts

  • The Indian government has given its nod to the appointment of new Chief Justices for three High Courts: Allahabad, Chhattisgarh, and Patna.
  • Justice Pritinker Diwaker has been designated as the Chief Justice of the Allahabad High Court.
  • Justice Ramesh Sinha, previously from Allahabad High Court, will assume the role of Chief Justice at Chhattisgarh High Court.
  • Justice K Vinod Chandaran from the Kerala High Court has been appointed as the Chief Justice of the Patna High Court.
  • These appointments followed recommendations made by the Supreme Court Collegium in February 2023.

2. Indian Army and IAF Conduct Joint Multi-Domain Exercise in Eastern Theatre

  • The Indian Army and Indian Air Force recently executed a 96-hour multi-domain exercise named ‘Vayu Prahar’ in the eastern sector.
  • Taking place in the second week of March 2023, the objective was to strategize for enhanced synergy in multi-domain military operations.
  • The scope of this joint exercise encompassed rapid mobilization of a rapid reaction force from the hinterland.
  • Notably, the Chief of Army Staff is General Manoj Pande, while the Chief of the Air Staff is Vivek Ram Chaudhari.

National News

3. Lok Sabha Approves Substantial Budget for Jammu and Kashmir

  • The Lok Sabha has given its approval to a budget exceeding Rs. 1.18 lakh crore for the fiscal year 2023-24, allocated to the Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir.
  • A significant portion, amounting to 35%, is allocated as capital expenditure, primarily designated for development and infrastructure projects, with a sum of Rs. 41,491 crore.
  • The expected revenue receipts are estimated at Rs. 1,06,061 crore, while the anticipated revenue expenditure is set at Rs. 77,009 crore.
  • These financial allocations are anticipated to foster economic growth in the region, with a projected growth rate of 10%.

Defence

4. Ministry of Defence Inks Contracts Worth Rs. 3,700 Crore with BEL

  • In a move to enhance the operational capabilities of the Indian Air Force (IAF), the Ministry of Defence has sealed two separate contracts with Bharat Electronics Limited (BEL), collectively valued at over Rs. 3,700 crore.
  • The initial contract, worth more than Rs. 2,800 crore, pertains to the supply of Medium Power Radars (MPR) called ‘Arudhra’ for the Indian Air Force.
  • The second contract, valued at approximately Rs. 950 crore, encompasses the procurement of 129 DR-118 Radar Warning Receivers (RWR).
  • Both of these projects are classified under the Buy Indian- IDMM (Indigenously Designed Developed and Manufactured) category.
  • The radar systems have been conceived and developed by the Defense Research and Development Organization (DRDO) and will be manufactured by BEL.
  • These contracts align with the ‘Aatmanirbhar Bharat’ initiative and contribute to India’s journey towards self-reliance in defense manufacturing.

Recent MoUs

  • NTPC has signed an agreement with Italy-based Maire Technimont Pvt Ltd for green methanol production.
  • NTPC Limited has entered into an MoU with GE Power India Limited to reduce carbon intensity.
  • NTPC has also inked an MoU with GE Gas Power for hydrogen co-firing in gas turbines.
  • BHEL has signed MoUs with Coal India Limited (CIL) and NLC India Limited (NLCIL) for the establishment of Coal Gasification-based plants.
  • Coal India Limited (CIL) has collaborated with Rajasthan Vidyut Utpadan Nigam Limited (RVUNL) to establish a 1190 MW solar power plant in the Bikaner district of Rajasthan.
