1. ‘YSR Nethanna Nestham’ scheme

  • Andhra Pradesh chief minister YS Jaganmohan Reddy launched the ‘YSR Nethanna Nestham’ scheme.
  • The scheme will provide financial assistance of Rs 24,000 annually to handloom weavers across the state.

2. New Foreign Secretary

  • Harsh Vardhan Shringla, India’s Ambassador to the US, has been appointed as the new Foreign Secretary replacing Vijay Gokhale.
  • Harsh Vardhan Shringla is an Indian diplomat and the current Indian Ambassador to the United States.
  • He is the 33rd Foreign Secretary of India and will assume charge on 29 January 2020. He previously served as the High Commissioner of India to Bangladesh and Ambassador to Thailand.

3. Vidushi Savita Devi passes away

  • Hindustani classical vocalist Vidushi Savita Devi has passed away.
  • She was known for her thumirs. She was the author of the book ‘Maa…Siddheshwari’

4. RBI caps lending on P2P platforms

  • RBI has put a cap on a peer-to-peer lending (P2P) platform the permissible exposure of a lender to all borrowers should not exceed Rs 50 lakh at any given point of time.
  • The lender investing more than Rs 10 lakh across P2P platforms will produce a certificate to P2P platforms from a practicing Chartered Accountant certifying minimum net-worth of Rs 50 lakh.
  • P2P lending websites connect borrowers directly to investors. The site sets the rates and terms and enables the transaction. P2P lenders are individual investors who want to get a better return on their cash savings than a bank savings account or CD offers.

International News

1. Satellite to monitor Amazon rain forest

  • An Earth observation satellite jointly developed by China and Brazil was launched to monitor Amazon rain forest.
  • The China-Brazil Earth Resource Satellite-4A was launched on a Long March-4B rocket in the northern Chinese province of Shanxi.

2. Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank with India

  • Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank has announced a total loan of $210 million for irrigation and solar energy projects in India.
  • The Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank is a multilateral development bank that aims to support the building of infrastructure in the Asia-Pacific region. The bank currently has 74 members as well as 26 prospective members from around the world.

  • Sangita Reddy has taken over as the President of the Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce & Industry (FICCI) for 2019-20.

4. NABARD chief

  • Government of India has extended tenure of NABARD chief Harsh Kumar Bhanwala by six months.
