1. India’s Military Expenditure in 2022
- In 2022, India became the fourth-largest global military spender. A study by the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute (SIPRI) revealed an approximate 6% increase in the nation’s defense budget from 2021.
- About a quarter of this budget was channeled towards equipment and infrastructure due to ongoing border tensions with China. Salaries and pensions also consumed a significant portion.
- With a defense budget of $81.4 billion, there was a surge of 47% compared to 2013 figures. The top five global spenders—U.S. (39%), China (13%), Russia (3.9%), India (3.6%), and Saudi Arabia (3.3%)—made up 63% of 2022’s worldwide military expenses. Overall, global defense spending increased by 3.7% in 2022, reaching $2,240 billion.

2. National Medical Devices Policy 2023
- The Indian government approved the 2023 National Medical Devices Policy, aiming to reduce the country’s dependency on medical imports significantly.
- Under this policy, the Medical Devices Sector is predicted to grow from $11 billion currently to $50 billion within the next five years, emphasizing sector growth, accessibility, affordability, and innovation.
- Furthermore, approval for the establishment of 157 nursing colleges has been granted.

3. Bangladesh’s Presidential Transition
- Ex-judge and seasoned politician, Mohammed Shahabuddin Chuppu, was sworn in as the 22nd President of Bangladesh, succeeding Abdul Hamid whose term ended on April 23, 2023.
- Chuppu’s election in February was uncontested, representing the ruling party. Born in 1949, Chuppu, from the Pabna District, previously served in the Anti-Corruption Commission.

6. India’s Quantum Technology Mission
- Under the leadership of PM Narendra Modi, the Indian Cabinet has approved the National Quantum Mission (NQM) with an allocation of Rs. 6003.65 crore for the period 2023-24 to 2030-31.
- This initiative aims to spur quantum tech-based economic development, positioning India as a leader in Quantum Technologies & Applications (QTA). Primary objectives include the development of intermediate-scale quantum computers with 50-1000 physical qubits within the next eight years, advanced magnetometers, atomic clocks, and quantum materials essential for quantum device fabrication.
