1. U.S. Vice President Joe Biden Appoints Indian-American Astronaut J. Chari
- U.S. Vice President Joe Biden has nominated Indian-American astronaut J. Chari, recently promoted to the rank of brigadier general in the U.S. Air Force.
- The Senate is required to approve all senior civilian and military appointments, including Chari’s nomination.
- Chari currently serves as an astronaut commander for Crew-3 at NASA’s Johnson Space Center.
- He also took on the role of space flight engineer during Expedition 66 under the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA).

2. Mughal Gardens in Delhi Renamed as “Amrit Udyan”
- The Mughal Gardens at Rashtrapati Bhavan in New Delhi have been renamed “Amrit Udyan” by the Central Government.
- This renaming aligns with the theme of ‘Amrit Mahotsav’, celebrating India’s 75 years of independence.
- The 15-acre garden, a focal point since its inception in 1917, has often been referred to as the “soul of the White House”.
- Edwin Lutyens designed the Mughal Gardens in 1917, and the first trees were planted between 1928-1929.
- Rajpath in Delhi has also been renamed as “Kartavya Path” by the Central Government.
3. Completion of “Bajrang Setu” Bridge by July 2023
- The “Bajrang Setu” cable suspension bridge in Rishikesh, Uttarakhand, will be India’s first and Asia’s second when completed in July 2023.
- It will replace the iconic Laxman Jhula, built 90 years ago, which was closed to pedestrian traffic in 2022 due to safety concerns.
- The old bridge will be preserved as a historic relic.
- The estimated cost for the new bridge is Rs 67 crores.
International News
4. Canada to Launch First Commercial Photonic Quantum Computer
- Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has announced the commercialization of the world’s first photonic-based, fault-tolerant quantum computer.
- Xanadu Quantum Technologies Inc. received a $40 million CAD investment to develop this quantum computer for sectors like banking, transport, and healthcare.
- This $142.1 million (CAD) project is expected to create approximately 530 new high-skilled jobs in high-tech and quantum computing sectors.
- Xanadu, founded in 2016, aims to make quantum computers accessible and beneficial for everyone and has developed PennyLane, an open-source software library for quantum computing application.

- Data Privacy Day (DPD) is celebrated globally on January 28th every year to promote awareness and emphasize the importance of privacy practices and principles.
- It encourages a culture of privacy, stressing that everyone plays a part in safeguarding personal data.
- The theme for this year (2023) is “first think privacy”.
- The tradition of Data Protection Day was initiated by the Council of Europe on January 26, 2006.
