1. RBI’s Approval for LIC’s HDFC Bank Stake Increase
- The Reserve Bank of India has given the Life Insurance Corporation of India (LIC) the green light to increase its stake in HDFC Bank up to 9.99%.
- LIC’s current holding in HDFC Bank is 5.19%, as per the bank’s shareholding pattern on December 31.
- The RBI’s approval, communicated in a letter dated January 25, enables LIC to potentially double its stake, significantly enhancing its influence in HDFC Bank.
- This development comes amidst HDFC Bank’s share price volatility, which has been experiencing a downward trend, reaching nearly its lowest in a year, particularly following the bank’s thirdquarter financial results.
2. Bank of Baroda’s Infrastructure Bond Issuance
- Bank of Baroda, a statecontrolled entity, is issuing infrastructure bonds worth Rs 5,000 crore with a 10year maturity period.
- The bond issue includes a base amount of Rs 1,000 crore and an option to retain oversubscription up to Rs 4,000 crore, known as a greenshoe option.
- This move signifies Bank of Baroda’s commitment to supporting infrastructure financing in India.
3. ICRA’s Revised Bank Credit Growth Estimate
- ICRA has updated its forecast for bank credit growth in FY24 to an increase between 14.9% and 15.3%, or about ₹20.4 to ₹20.9 lakh crore.
- This revision is a significant increase from the previous projection of 12.8% to 13% growth.
- ICRA also expects bond issuances in FY24 to be between ₹9.6 lakh crore and ₹9.9 lakh crore, with an even higher projection for FY25.
- However, ICRA cautions that deposit mobilization challenges could slow down credit expansion, potentially reducing growth rates in FY25.
4. Zomato Payments Receives RBI Authorization
- Zomato Payments, a subsidiary of Zomato Limited, has been authorized by the RBI to operate as an online payment aggregator.
- This allows Zomato to engage in payment processing and issue prepaid payment instruments.
