2. NGT Imposes â‚ą10 Crore Fine on Kerala Government for Ramsar Sites Neglect

  • The Principal Bench of the National Green Tribunal, situated in New Delhi, has penalized the Kerala government with a â‚ą10 crore fine. This penalty is the consequence of the government’s failure to curb the rampant pollution of the Ramsar-listed Vembanad and Ashtamudi lakes.
  • The fine, based on the ‘polluter pays principle,’ must be deposited into a dedicated account under the authority of the Chief Secretary.

3. Egypt Joins BRICS New Development Bank

  • This African-Arab nation officially joined the NDB on February 20.
  • The NDB was established by BRICS nations based on an intergovernmental agreement inked during the sixth BRICS summit in Fortaleza in July 2014.
  • The upcoming BRICS Summit, scheduled to be hosted by South Africa in August, is expected to facilitate intra-BRICS trade using national currencies, thereby safeguarding member nations’ foreign exchange reserves.
