1. Programme ‘YUVIKA’

  • ISRO has launched a programme for school children named Young Scientist Programme or Yuva Vigyani Karyakram (YUVIKA).
  • Imparting basic knowledge on space technology, space science and space applications to school children with the intent of arousing their interest in the emerging areas of space activities.

2. Vijaywada Railway Station to get ‘Gold Rating’

  • Vijayawada railway station has received Gold Rating by the Indian Green Building Council.
  • The station is now with 100% LED lighting, five star rated fans, pumps and motors and solar water heating systems.
  • Green building rating brings together a host of sustainable practices and solutions to reduce the environmental impacts. Green building design provides an integrated approach considering life cycle impacts of the resources used.

3. Telangana State GlobalLinker Portal

  • Telangana Govt. has launched a digital business networking portal for Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises named ‘Telangana State GlobalLinker’
  • MSMEs to create a digital profile for their business, connect with other global MSMEs, enable them to find buyers and suppliers, gain visibility and receive up-to-date industry trends and news.

4. Malayalam Writer and Poet Ashita passes away

  • Ashitha was an Indian writer of Malayalam literature, best known for her short stories, poems and translations.
  • She contributed in popularising haiku poems in Malayalam through her translations and her stories were known for the sensitive portrayal of life.
  • She was the recipient of Padmarajan Award – Thathagatha (2000), Lalithambika Antharjanam Award (1994) and Edaserri Award (1986).

International News

1. India with African Union

  • India and African Union have signed an MoU to establish an India-Africa health sciences collaborative platform.
  • The African Union is a continental union consisting of 55 member states located on the continent of Africa, with exception of various territories of European possessions located in Africa.
  • The bloc was founded on 26 May 2001 in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia and launched on 9 July 2002 in South Africa.

2. Bodley Medal

  • Nobel laureate Amartya Sen was awarded Bodley Medal by the University of Oxford.
  • The Bodley Medal is awarded by the Bodleian Library at Oxford University to individuals who have made “outstanding contributions to the worlds of communications and literature” and who have helped the library achieve “the vision of its founder, Sir Thomas Bodley, to be a library not just to Oxford University but also to the world”.
  • Amartya Sen is an Indian economist and philosopher. He has made contributions to welfare economics, social choice theory, economic and social justice, economic theories of famines, and indices of the measure of well-being of citizens of developing countries.
  • Amartya Sen was awarded the Nobel Memorial Prize in Economic Sciences in 1998 and India’s Bharat Ratna in 1999 for his work in welfare economics. In 2017, Sen was awarded the Johan Skytte Prize in Political Science for most valuable contribution to Political Science.

3. Skytrax World Airport Awards

  • Changi Airport of Singapore has been named as the World’s Best Aviation Hub for the 7th time in a row.
  • Indira Gandhi International (IGI) Airport of New Delhi is featured at 59 position.
  • Skytrax is a United Kingdom–based consultancy which runs an airline and airport review and ranking site.

  • Nepal Government is organizing ‘Nepal Investment Summit 2019’ in Kathmandu.

Business News

1. Maruti Suzuki’s MD and CEO

  • Maruti Suzuki has re-appointed Kenichi Ayukawa as Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer for 3 years.
  • Maruti Suzuki India Limited, formerly known as Maruti Udyog Limited, is an automobile manufacturer in India. It is a 56.21% owned subsidiary of the Japanese car and motorcycle manufacturer Suzuki Motor Corporation. As of July 2018, it had a market share of 53% of the Indian passenger car market.

2. ‘Bhonga’ App

  • ‘Bhonga’ App will connect users to people in their neighbourhood in the city even without an Internet connection.
  • It is launched by Mumbai-based company Linkus Infratech.
  • Bhonga is a word in Marathi language which means megaphone or loudspeaker.

3. Government to infuse capital in BoB

  • Government will infuse Rs 5042 crore in Bank of Baroda ahead of its merger with two other public sector lenders Dena Bank and Vijaya Bank.
  • The merger of Dena Bank and Vijaya Bank with BoB will be effective from April 1.

Sports News

1. Roland-Garros (French Open) with Infosys

  • Infosys has signed a three-year partnership agreement with Roland-Garros to provide a digital solution for French Open tennis tournament.
  • The French Open, also called Roland-Garros, is a major tennis tournament held over two weeks between late May and early June at the Stade Roland-Garros in Paris, France. The venue is named after the French aviator Roland Garros.

2. Ethics Officer of the Indian cricket board

  • BCCI Ombudsman Justice D K Jain (Retd.) will serve as the Ethics Officer of the Indian cricket board on an ad-hoc basis.
  • In BCCI’s provisions, Ethics Officer to be appointed to determine and decide issues related to conflict of interest.

3. Bruce Yardley passes away

  • Bruce Yardley was an Australian cricketer who played from 1978 to 1983.
  • Cricket Australia, formerly known as the Australian Cricket Board, is the governing body for professional and amateur cricket in Australia. It was originally formed in 1905 as the ‘Australian Board of Control for International Cricket’. It is incorporated as an Australian Public Company, limited by guarantee.
