1. India’s first digital bank for sanitary pads.

  • Mumbai MLA Bharati Lavekar has launched India’s first digital bank for sanitary pads on the occasion of World Menstrual Hygiene Day.
  • People can log in to tee foundation.in to either donate pads or money to those in need.
  • The needy can also access available resources on the portal.

2. New Aeronautical test range in Karnataka.

  • Union Defence Minister Arun Jaitley inaugrated a first-of-its-kind Aeronautical Test Range in the Chitradurga district of Karnataka.
  • It will spread across an area of 4,200 acres and will be the leading test centre for DRDO.
  • It has been built at a cost of Rs. 1300 crore.
  • The ATR is already home to two of India’s unmanned aerial vehicles- Rustom-1 and Rustom-2- that have undertaken test flights in Challakere before.

3. Satyabrata Rout awarded Sangeet Natak Akademi Puraskar.

  • Satyabrata Rout has been awarded Sangeet Natak Akademi Puraskar for the year 2016.
  • He has been awarded for developing a unique method of teaching and practising direction and design.
  • The Sangeet Natak Akademi Puraskar is an award given by the Sangeet Natak Akademi.
  • It is the highest Indian recognition given to practising artists.

4. INS Ganga to retire.

  • INS Ganga will be placed in non-operational followed by decommissioning, after 32 years of service.
  • INS Ganga is a Godavari-class guided-missile frigate of the Indian Navy.
  • It was built in Mumbai by Mazagon Dock Limited.
  • NS Ganga was commissioned on December 30, 1985.

International News
1. Kazakhstan to produce nuclear fuel for China.

  • Kazakhstan will start producing nuclear fuel for Chinese power plants in 2019 through a joint venture set up by the two countries.
  • The first stage of the joint venture will produce about 200 tonnes of nuclear fuel a year.
  • Kazakhstan has no enrichment facilities and mostly exports uranium in the form of triuranium octoxide or pellets.

2. The Square wins top prize at Cannes Film Festival.

  • The Swedish film ‘The Square’ has won the Palme d’Or, the top prize at 70th Cannes Film Festival.
  • The Square is a Swedish satirical drama film directed by Ruben Östlund.
  • The film ‘120 Beats Per Minute!’ won the Grand Prix, the runner-up prize.
  • The 70th annual Cannes Film Festival took place from 17 to 28 May 2017, in Cannes, France.

1. Fairfax sells 12% in ICICI Lombard.

  • Investment firm Fairfax Financial Holdings has offloaded 12.18 per cent in ICICI Lombard General Insurance to a clutch of investors, including Warburg Pincus,
  • The stake sale by Fairfax is part of its plan to sell 25 per cent in the general insurance firm and start a new insurance joint venture.
  • ICICI Lombard was set up in 2001 as a joint venture between ICICI Bankand India-born Canadian billionaire Prem Watsa’s Fairfax.

Prasar Bharati signs MoU with SNRT.

  • Prasar Bharati has got into an agreement with Morocco’s Societe Nationale de Radiodiffusion et de Television.
  • The agreement has been signed to step up cooperation in the broadcasting sector.
  • The MoU was signed by Kheya Bhattacharya, Ambassador of India, on behalf of Prasar Bharati and Faycal Laraichi, CEO of SNRT.

Sports News
1. 2017 World Table Tennis Championships begins.

  • World Table Tennis Championships began in Dusseldorf, Germany with the Qualification matches.
  • This is the 54th edition of the competition and is being hosted by Germany for the seventh time.
  • 8 member Indian squad lead by Achanta Sharath Kamal will represent India.
