1. ISSF World Cup Shotgun 2023

  • Indian shooters Mairaj Ahmad Khan and Ganemat Sekhon secured India’s first gold medal at the ongoing ISSF World Cup Shotgun 2023 in Cairo, Egypt.
  • In the Skeet Mixed Team final, they bested Luis Raul Gallardo Oliveros and Gabriela Rodriguez with a score of 6-0.
  • Simona Scocchetti and Gabrielle Rossetti from Italy clinched the bronze in the competition.

2. ASEAN-India Maritime Exercise Debut

  • India is participating in the inaugural ASEAN-India Maritime Exercise with the deployment of its leading warships, INS Satpura and INS Delhi.
  • The first phase of the exercise is scheduled for May 2-4 at Singapore’s Changi Naval Base, followed by the sea phase in the South China Sea from May 7-8.
  • INS Delhi is India’s first domestically built guided missile destroyer, while INS Satpura is a homegrown guided missile stealth frigate.

3. India Joins ICAO’s CORSIA and LTAG from 2027

  • India will participate in the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) Carbon Offsetting and Reduction Scheme for International Aviation (CORSIA) and Long-Term Aspirational Goals (LTAG) starting from 2027.
  • This announcement was made during a Consultative Committee of the Parliament meeting for the Ministry of Civil Aviation, chaired by Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia.
  • The ICAO has established goals to reduce carbon emissions from international aviation.

4. Australia’s Grant for a Project in Ladakh

  • In a significant move for Ladakh, the Australian High Commission in India announced a Government Grant specifically for a Project in Kargil.
  • The announcement was made during a meeting in Srinagar chaired by the Australian High Commissioner to India, Barry O’Farrell.
  • The project, named “Return to Roots”, aims to integrate traditional knowledge with modern school science curricula, aligning with the objectives of the National Education Policy (NEP).

5. Launch of ‘StarBerrySense’ Star Sensor by IIA

  • The Indian Institute of Astrophysics (IIA) has developed a cost-effective star sensor named ‘StarBerrySense’ using readily available components.
  • The sensor was successfully launched on the Indian Space Research Organisation’s PSLV C-55 on April 22, 2023.
  • The main function of this star sensor is to quickly and accurately determine a satellite’s orientation in space by identifying stars within its field of view.

6. India-UAE Trade Relations

  • Projections indicate that India’s exports to the UAE could increase to $50 billion by the fiscal year 2026-27, up from the current $31.3 billion.
  • This growth follows the implementation of a free trade agreement between the two countries on May 1, 2022.
  • Commerce Secretary Sunil Barthwal underscored the substantial growth in trade between India and the UAE since the approval of the India-UAE Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement on February 18, 2022.

7. Successful Trial of ‘ADC-150’ Air Droppable Container

  • The Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) and the Indian Navy successfully tested the ‘ADC-150’, an air-droppable container, from an IL 38SD aircraft in Goa.
  • This container, with a 150 kg payload capacity, was designed and developed in India.
  • The test was aimed at enhancing naval logistics operations, ensuring the rapid delivery of crucial engineering supplies to naval ships and minimizing the need for vessels to approach coastlines to retrieve essential items.

8. World Tuna Day – May 2nd

  • World Tuna Day is celebrated annually on May 2nd to raise awareness about the importance of tuna to humans and the environment.
  • The theme for 2023 is “The Global Tuna Industry: Trailblazing through Tough Times”.
  • The day stresses the importance of sustainable fishing methods and educates the global community about the endangered status of tuna due to high meat demand.
  • The United Nations General Assembly established World Tuna Day in December 2016 to emphasize the conservation of endangered species. The first World Tuna Day was observed in 2017.
  • According to UN data, about 7 million metric tons of tuna and related species are harvested every year.
