1. MoRTH Annual Report: Road Accidents in India 2022

  • The Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH) released their annual report, “Road Accidents in India 2022.”
  • Approximately 4,61,312 road accidents were recorded across Indian States and Union Territories in 2022, resulting in about 1,68,491 deaths and 4,43,366 injuries.
  • Tamil Nadu reported the highest number of accidents for the fifth consecutive year.

2. International Day to End Impunity for Crimes against Journalists

  • Observed on November 2nd each year by the United Nations, this day honors journalists who have lost their lives and emphasizes addressing impunity in crimes against journalists.
  • It also highlights the importance of journalism and media in combating violence and discrimination, particularly in digital spaces.

3. ‘Exercise KAZIND 2023’

  • The Indian Army and Indian Air Force are participating in ‘Exercise KAZIND 2023,’ a joint military exercise with Kazakhstan, held in Otar, Kazakhstan.
  • This exercise signifies the ongoing military cooperation between India and Kazakhstan.

4. UNESCO Creative Cities Network Inclusion

  • On World Cities Day (October 31, 2023), UNESCO added 55 new cities to its Creative Cities Network (UCCN), including Kozhikode as a ‘City of Literature’ and Gwalior as a ‘City of Music’ from India.

5. Collins Dictionary Word of the Year: “AI”

  • “AI” (Artificial Intelligence) was selected as the Word of the Year for 2023 by Collins Dictionary.

6. British Academy Book Prize for Global Cultural Understanding

  • Nandini Das, an India-born writer in the UK, won the 11th British Academy Book Prize for Global Cultural Understanding in 2023 for her book “Courting India: England, Mughal India and the Origins of Empire.”

7. New CMD of BHEL: Koppu Sadashiv Murthy

  • Koppu Sadashiv Murthy has been appointed as the Chairman and Managing Director (CMD) of Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited (BHEL), succeeding Nalin Shinghal.

8. Passing of Saleemul Huq

  • Saleemul Huq, a renowned Bangladeshi-British climate scientist, passed away at the age of 71 in Dhaka, Bangladesh.
  • He was the director of the International Centre for Climate Change and Development (ICCCAD) in Bangladesh and was awarded the OBE by Queen Elizabeth II in 2022.

9. Autobiography by S. Somnath: ‘Nilavu Kudicha Simhangal’

  • S. Somnath, Chairman of the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO), authored his autobiography ‘Nilavu Kudicha Simhangal’ in Malayalam.
