1. Online Income Tax Return filing up by 20%

  • The filing recorded a surge of 20% with about 2.33 crore people submitting their returns.
  • Last year, the total number of income tax returns filed online around the same time of the year was 1.92 crore.

2. 11.44 lakh duplicate PAN’s deactivated

  • They were deleted or deactivated in cases where multiple PAN’s were allotted to one person.
  • 1566 fake PAN’s have been identified which were allotted to non-existent people or in the names of persons with false identities.

3. Mumbai’s taxi drivers oppose GPS installation

  • The Mumbai Taximens Union say that the additional expenses of installation is a burden to the drivers.
  • This comes after the government plans to install GPS devices to help track taxis from control room and ensure safety of passengers.

International News

1.India may face deadly heat waves by 2100

  • An MIT study says that nearly 1.5 billion people in India, Pakistan and Bangladesh are likely to face deadly heat waves at the end of the century.
  • Climate change would cause 70% of Indian population face extremes of 32 degrees of wet-bulb temperatures with 2% facing the survival limit of 35 degrees celsius.

2. Pakistan’s Government website hacked

  • It was hacked with Indian Independence Day greetings and National Anthem displayed on the screen with a note, “Hacked by Ne0 h4ck3r”.
  • 4 months earlier, 3 Indian Institutes’ websites were hacked by a pro-Pakistan group called “Pakistan Haxors Crew”.

3. China extends hold on designating Masood Azhar as terrorist

  • China has extended its hold on the US proposal to designate Jaish-e-Mohammed chief Masood Azhar as a designated terrorist by the UN.
  • Earlier, China repeatedly blocked in India’s move to ban Azhar leading to a lapse of India’s application.

4. US tests unarmed intercontinental ballistic missile

  • The US Air Force successfully launched the missile from California, the fourth of its kind this year.
  • The test is to show the readiness and the effectiveness of the system amidst concerns over N Korea which claims to have range to reach the US.

Business News

1 . Titan’s profit rises 96.8% in June quarter

  • Jewellery and watch maker Titan saw its net profit rise to Rs.237.97 crore in June Quarter.
  • The company’s revenue rose 42% to Rs.4049 crore.

2. Dow Jones surges above 22,000 for 1st time

  • US Stock Index Dow Jones crossed 22,000 mark for the first time ever.
  • This came after Apple shares jumped as much as 6.46% to a record high after it reported strong iPhone sales.

3. Patanjali to launch its line of clothing

  • Baba Ramdev’s Patanjali Ayurved is planning to launch swadeshi line of clothing by April 2018.
  • They have estimated the first year sales of Rs.5000 crore with the clothing initially to be available in 250 exclusive outlets.

4. Standard Chartered profit jumps 93%

  • The pre-tax profit was up by 93% to $1.9 billion in the first half of 2017.
  • The company’s underlying income rose 6% year-on-year to $7.2 billion.
  • CEO Bill Winters says that the bank is more efficient.

1. Pujara, Rahane hit centuries at Day 1 of Colombo Test

  • India ended the first day of Colombo Test at 344/3
  • Pujara,who crossed 4,000 test runs became the joint second fastest Indian to achieve the feat.

2. Jhajharia to be awarded Khel Ratna

  • Double Paralympics gold medallist Devendra Jhajharia will become the first para athlete to be awarded Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna.
  • He is the only Indian to win two Paralympic golds.
