1. High-Security Registration Plates

  • All motor vehicles will be fitted with tamper-proof high-security registration plates (HSRPs) from April 1 that will protect against counterfeiting.
  • This will amend ‘Central Motor Vehicles Rules, 1989’.
  • HSRPs is a chromium-based hologram applied by hot stamping on the number plates.

2. IRRI South Asia Regional Centre

  • PM Modi has inaugurated the IRRI South Asia Regional Centre (ISARC) at National Seed Research and Training Centre in Varanasi.
  • This is the 6th IRRI center in India.
  • The aim is to improve livelihood and nutrition, abolishing poverty, hunger, and malnutrition.

3. Adhyatmik Vibhag (spiritual department)

  • Madhya Pradesh Govt. (Congress) will form an Adhyatmik Vibhag (spiritual department) by merging several existing departments.
  • Earlier BJP Govt. formed Anand Vibhag (happiness department), first of its kind in the countries.

4. India’s first vertical-lift bridge

  • Indian Railways will build India’s first vertical-lift bridge to connect Rameswaram to mainland India.
  • It will replace the existing 104-year-old Pamban bridge.
  • Pamban Bridge is a railway bridge which connects the town of Rameswaram on Pamban Island to mainland India. Opened on 24 February 1914, it was India’s first sea bridge, and was the longest sea bridge in India until the opening of the Bandra-Worli Sea Link in 2010.

International News

1. Single-use plastic free flight

  • Portuguese airline Hi Fly is now the first airline to take off single-use plastic free passenger flight.
  • Hi Fly is a Portuguese charter airline headquartered in Lisbon. || Headquarters: Lisbon, Portugal || Founded: 2005

2. Norman Gimbel passes away

  • Lyricist Norman Gimbel has passed away at 91.
  • He was Oscar-and Grammy-winning lyricist and was best known for writing the lyrics of “Killing Me Softly With His Song” and “The Girl From Ipanema”.

3. Gallup’s Most admired by Americans poll

  • The man most admired by Americans :- Barack Obama
  • The woman most admired by Americans :- Michelle Obama

4. Nancy Grace Roman passes away

  • American astronomer Nancy Grace Roman has passed away at 93.
  • Nancy Grace Roman was an American astronomer and was one of the first female executives at NASA. She is known to many as the “Mother of Hubble” for her role in planning the Hubble Space Telescope.

Business News

1. India’s FDI Inflow

  • Acc. to Dealogic Technology company, In 2018 India saw more than $38 billion of FDIs as compared to China’s $32 billion.
  • A foreign direct investment is an investment in the form of a controlling ownership in a business in one country by an entity based in another country. It is thus distinguished from a foreign portfolio investment by a notion of direct control.

2. SIDBI to use 1000-crore corpus for funding micro lenders

  • RBI has granted the permission to Small Industries Development Bank of India to use 1000-crore corpus for funding micro lenders.

3. Subhash Chandra Bose Aapda Prabandhan Puraskaar

  • Central Govt. has commissioned Subhash Chandra Bose Aapda Prabandhan Puraskaar.
  • It will be an annual award to recognise the excellent work done by individuals/institutions for disaster management.

4. BeiDou Navigation Satellite System

  • BeiDou Navigation Satellite System of China has started its global service.
  • It is a rival to Global Positioning System (GPS) of USA.
  • Pakistan has become the first nation to use the BeiDou system.

Sports News

1. Cave Diver Vernon Unsworth

  • Vernon Unsworth (UK) has been awarded the Member of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire.
  • He helped rescue 12 boys and their coach from a Thai cave earlier.
  • Cave diving is underwater diving in water-filled caves. It may be done as an extreme sport, a way of exploring flooded caves for scientific investigation, or for the search for and recovery of divers lost while diving for one of these reasons.

2. Boxing Day Test Victory

  • India beat Australia by 137 runs in the third Test to take a 2-1 lead in the four-match series.
  • The Boxing Day Test match is a cricket Test match held in Melbourne, Victoria, Australia involving the Australian cricket team and an opposing national team that is touring Australia during the southern summer. It begins annually on Boxing Day and is played at the Melbourne Cricket Ground.

3. Hopman Cup Tennis tournament
