National News

1. Face-off between Indian and Chinese troops

  • India and China have deployed around 3,000 troops each on the Sikkim-Bhutan-Tibet tri-junction
  • Kailash Mansarovar yatra through Nathu La was also cancelled in the wake of the face-off between Indian and Chinese troops over a disputed area along the Sino-Indian border.
  • Yesterday, Indian Army Chief Bipin Rawat arrived in Sikkim to review the security situation amid a stand-off between the two countries’ troops along the border in the area.

2. Modi on a two-day visit to his home state Gujarat.

  • Prime Minister Narendra Modi arrived in Ahmedabad Yesterday morning to inaugurate the Sabarmati Ashram centenary celebrations.
  • At the ashram, the PM attended an event marking the 150th birth anniversary of Shrimad Rajchandraji.
  • Today, Modi is scheduled to attend programmes in Ahmedabad, Rajkot, Modasa and Gandhinagar. He will also inaugurate 2 water supply projects worth Rs 552 crore in.

3. Uttarakhand gets award of excellence

  • Uttarakhand was conferred with the award of excellence at the 2nd Global Skill Development Summit held in Paris recently
  • The award was for innovations and extensive use of IT for skilling the states youth.
  • Project Director of Uttarakhand Skill Development Committee Pankaj Kumar Pandey received the honour on behalf of the state.

4. India top supplier in health sector to UN system in 2016

  • India was the main supplier in the health sector to the UN system in 2016 with total sales of over $800 million
  • India supplied 6% of procurements by UN organisations in 2016, second highest after US.
  • Goods and services from India were procured primarily by UNICEF, PAHO, UNDP and WFP.

International News

1. Pakistan bans Hafiz Saeed-backed terror outfit

  • Pakistan has banned terrorist Hafiz Saeed-backed outfit Tehreek-eAzadi-Jammu & Kashmir, a group that is essentially a rebranded Jamaat-ud-Dawa (JuD), which in turn was the mastermind of the 2008 Mumbai attacks.
  • Pakistan banning JuD’s proxy outfit could well be seen as a response to the Donald Trump administration hinting a harder line against Islamabad
  • It also comes ahead of an intergovernmental body updating its assessment of ‘high-risk and non-cooperative jurisdictions’ involved in terror financing

2. Germany legalises same-sex marriage

  • The German Parliament has legalised same-sex marriage by passing the Bill that grants full marital rights, including child adoption, to gay and lesbian couples.
  • Chancellor Angela Merkel voted against the Bill
  • Merkel said she hoped the Parliament’s approval would lead to more “social cohesion”

3. French Politicial Simone Veil dies at 89

  • French politician, Holocaust survivor and women’s right’s proponent Simone Veil died at the age of 89 in Paris Today
  • Veil, who was best known to have legalised abortion during her tenure as French health minister in 1974
  • “May her example inspire our fellow countrymen, who will find in her the best of France,” President Emmanuel Macron said.

4. US to sell arms worth $1.42 billion to Taiwan

  • The United States plans to sell arms worth $1.42 billion (Rs 91.86 billion) to Taiwan, a move certain to anger China, whose help Trump has been seeking to counter North Korea
  • The US also imposed sanctions against a Chinese bank, the Bank of Dangdong, which it claims is linked to North Korea
  • The US also used Chinese President Xi Jinping’s visit to Hong Kong to call for more democracy in the autonomous territory. Jinping is in Hong Kong to celebrate the 20th anniversary of the region’s return to China.

Business News

1. Traders join nation-wide stir against GST

  • A number of prominent trade unions across the country will participate in strikes and stage protests against the imposition of Goods and Services Tax from July 1
  • The trade unions are opposing the “excessive” tax slabs and “complex processes” under the GST regime
  • As many as 40 trade unions in New Delhi will be extending their support to the nation-wide bandh, the Chamber of Trade and Industry said.

2. IndiGo interested in buying Air India’s overseas business

  • Private airline IndiGo has expressed interest in buying Air India’s international business, which the government put up for disinvestment yesterday
  • Civil Aviation Secretary Rajiv Nayan Choubey confirmed the news. IndiGo has a 40% market share and projected profitability for nine consecutive years.
  • In a letter to Civil Aviation Minister Ashok Gajapathi Raju, IndiGo President Aditya Ghosh said Indigo is open to buying the entire operation of the national airline if the demerger of its international business is not possible.
  • Air India, which has a fleet of 140 planes, flies to 41 international destinations. The airline is saddled with a debt of around Rs 46,500 crore.

3.RCom seeks to give up Rs 340 cr worth spectrum

  • Anil Ambani’s telecom venture -Reliance Communications (RCom) has approached the telecom ministry to surrender a part of its spectrum holdings in the 1,800-MHz frequency.
  • The move, if allowed by the government, will also enable the debt-laden company to escape paying the instalments towards the purchase of spectrum that it now wants to surrender.
  • This is perhaps the first time when a company has sought to return the much-cove ted airwaves to the government.

4. No dual MRP from next year

  • Products sold on e-commerce websites and medical devices declared as drugs, such as stents, will have to compulsorily carry Maximum Retail Prices and other essential information on them from 2018, as per the government’s new labelling rules
  • Food and Consumer Affairs Minister Ram Vilas Paswan has approved amendments to the Legal Metrology (Packaged Commodities) Rules, 2011, which will come into effect on January 1, 2018.
  • Products on e-commerce platforms [will have to] to display declarations required under the amended rules

1. Rahul Dravid to continue as India A and U-19 coach

  • The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) on Friday announced that Rahul Dravid will continue to remain the coach for India A and U-19 teams for the next two years.
  • The former India captain was first appointed as the coach for the two teams back in the year 2015 and under his leadership the youngsters have achieved outstanding results, at home and away.
  • BCCI acting president CK Khanna said, “Over the last two years, Rahul Dravid has been instrumental in getting young talent into the mix who have proved their worth on the big stage

2. FIFA to shift U-17 World Cup matches

  • FIFA is set to shift India’s Under-17 World Cup matches from Mumbai to Delhi.
  • Shift in venue is due to pressure from sports ministry as it felt it was appropriate that the capital hosts the home team’s games.
  • The first FIFA event in India will be held across 6 Indian cities from October 6 to 28.

3. We are still far away from China, says India badminton coach Pullela Gopichand

  • Chief national coach Pullela Gopichand on Friday made it clear that India still had a long way to go before becoming a dominant force such as China
  • He stated that an overhaul of domestic structure and administration will be needed to become a badminton superpower,
