1. ICG Conducts Regional Search And Rescue (SAR) Exercise in Andhra Pradesh

  • The Indian Coast Guard (ICG) recently executed a Regional Search and Rescue (SAR) exercise in Kakinada, Andhra Pradesh, from March 28 to 29, 2023.
  • Objective: Simulating a real-time maritime distress scenario and showcasing the effective functioning of the SAR organization for large-scale rescue operations.
  • This exercise engaged all relevant stakeholders, making optimal use of available resources for Maritime Search and Rescue (M-SAR) contingencies.
  • The Indian Coast Guard was established on February 1, 1977.

2. Naveen Jindal Receives Lifetime Achievement Award from Texas University

  • Indian industrialist Naveen Jindal was honored with a lifetime achievement award by the University of Texas at Dallas.
  • This recognition was bestowed upon him in acknowledgment of his outstanding contributions to industry, politics, and education.
  • Naveen Jindal is an alumnus of the University of Texas at Dallas, having graduated in 1992.
  • He becomes the second recipient of this award from the University of Texas, following Nobel Laureate Aziz Sancar.
  • Presently, he serves as the Chairman of Jindal Steel and Power Ltd.

3. Prof. Renu Cheema Vig Appointed as Vice Chancellor of Panjab University

  • Jagdeep Dhankhar, the Vice-President, has appointed Prof (Dr.) Renu Cheema Vig as the Vice Chancellor of Panjab University for a three-year term.
  • Notably, she is the first woman to assume this role in the university’s 141-year history.
  • Prof. Renu Cheema Vig had been serving as the Acting Vice Chancellor of Panjab University since January 16, 2023, following the resignation of Prof. Raj Kumar amidst corruption allegations.
  • A three-member selection committee was established to recommend suitable candidates for this position.

International News

4. Passport Index 2023: India’s Ranking and Insights

  • In the Passport Index for 2023, India’s position dropped six places to 144th, compared to 138th in the previous year.
  • The Passport Index, compiled by financial advisory services firm Arton Capital, ranks passports from 199 countries based on mobility scores. This score considers factors such as visa-free access, visa on arrival, eVisa usage within three days, and electronic travel authorizations.
  • India’s mobility score declined from 71 in 2019 to 47 in 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic but rose to 73 in 2022 as travel restrictions eased. However, it decreased to 70 in 2023.
  • According to the report, Indian passport holders can visit 59 countries without needing a visa.
  • In comparison, China ranked lower at 118th in the Passport Index individual rankings.
  • South Korea topped the rankings in Asia, holding the 12th position with a mobility score of 174, while Japan secured the 26th spot with a score of 172.
  • The United Arab Emirates claimed the top spot in the individual passport rankings with a mobility score of 181, followed by Sweden, Germany, Finland, Luxembourg, Spain, France, Italy, the Netherlands, and Austria, all with a joint mobility score of 174.

5. Defence Ministry Inks Contracts Worth Approximately 5,400 Crore Rupees

    • The Defence Ministry has signed three contracts worth nearly 5,400 crore rupees with domestic manufacturers to enhance the nation’s defence capabilities.
    • The first contract, valued at 1,982 crore rupees, has been signed with Bharat Electronics Limited (BEL) for the Automated Air Defence Control and Reporting System Project Akashteer, benefiting the Indian Army.
    • Another contract with BEL, worth 412 crore rupees, pertains to the acquisition of Sarang Electronic Support Measure systems for the Indian Navy.
    • The Sarang system is an advanced Electronic Support Measure system designed for Indian Navy helicopters. Both contracts aim to strengthen the Air Defence units of the Indian Army, enabling integrated operations.
    • The third contract, signed with New Space India Limited, involves the procurement of the advanced Communication Satellite GSAT 7B, costing 2,963 crore rupees for the Indian Army. This satellite will significantly enhance communication capabilities for troops, formations, as well as weapon and airborne platforms.
