1. A postal stamp dedicated to Nabin Chandra Das

  • Nabin Chandra Das was inventor of Rosogolla, a notable Bengali confectioner, entrepreneur, businessman and Bengali cultural icon of the second half of 19th century and early 20th century.
  • It was launched at festival Bagbazar-O-Rosogolla Utsob(a 3-day Rosogolla Utsav).

2. Human Space Mission Gaganyaan

  • Govt. has approved Rs 10,000 crore for the proposed human spaceflight mission (Gaganyaan).
  • Gaganyaan is an Indian crewed orbital spacecraft intended to be the basis of the Indian Human Spaceflight Programme. The spacecraft is being designed to carry three people, and a planned upgraded version will be equipped with rendezvous and docking capability.

3. Mrinal Sen passes away

  • Filmmaker Mrinal Sen has passed away at 91.
  • Mrinal Sen was a noted Bengali filmmaker based in Kolkata. Along with his contemporaries Satyajit Ray and Ritwik Ghatak, he was often considered to be one of the greatest ambassadors of Bengali parallel cinema on the global stage.

4. 42nd National Systems Conference

  • The 42nd National Systems Conference was organised by ‘Systems Society of India’ in Thiruvananthapuram.
  • ISRO chairman K.Sivan has been awarded the National Systems Gold Medal.
  • Systems Society of India (SSI) is a ‘professional body’ of distinguished Engineers and Scientists from Engineering, Science, Social Studies & Arts disciplines. It promotes advancement of theory, research, application & practice keeping in view the holistic systems approach for the advancement of humankind.

International News

1. International Camel Festival

  • The 26th International Camel Festival will be held on January 12 and 13 in Bikaner, Rajasthan.
  • The festival is organized as an initiative by the Department of Tourism, Art & Culture of the Rajasthan Government.

2. Global Healthcare Summit

  • President Kovind has inaugurated the 12th Global Healthcare Summit in Mumbai.
  • It was organised by the American Association of Physicians of Indian Origin.
  • Theme :- ‘Health for All’

3. Digital Transformation Hackathon

  • Mahum Siddiqi(Indian-American teenager) has won the inaugural ‘Digital Transformation Hackathon’ at Cornell University, New York.
  • Mahum Siddiqi has designed a device which can detect the actual level of pain of a patient during a diagnosis.

1. New chief information commissioner

  • The government has appointed Sudhir Bhargava as new chief information commissioner (CIC).
  • Chief Information Commission includes 1 Chief Information Commissioner and not more than 10 Information Commissioners who are appointed by the President of India. The first Chief Information Commissioner of India was Wajahat Habibullah. First woman Chief Information Commissioner was Deepak Sandhu.

  • ESAF Small Finance Bank is now scheduled bank under the second schedule of the RBI Act, 1934

4. Swachh Surveksahan 2018 award for Best Capital city

1. Heat stress scale in Australia Open

  • Tennis Australia has inducted a new ‘Heat Stress Scale’ for air temperature, radiant heat, humidity and wind speed.
  • It is regarding the health and safety risks under the extreme heat of Melbourne, Australia.

2. Australian Open 2019

  • The 2019 Australian Open is a Grand Slam tennis tournament that will take place at Melbourne Park, from 14 to 27 January 2019. It will be the 107th edition of the Australian Open, the 51st in the Open Era, and the first Grand Slam of the year.
  • The Australian Open is a tennis tournament held annually over the last fortnight of January in Melbourne, Australia. The tournament is the first of the four Grand Slam tennis events held each year, preceding the French Open, Wimbledon and the US Open.

3. 2019 AFC Asian Cup

  • The 2019 AFC Asian Cup will be the 17th edition of the AFC Asian Cup, the quadrennial international men’s football championship of Asia organised by the Asian Football Confederation. It will be held in the United Arab Emirates from 5 January to 1 February 2019.
