1. Introduction of the National Deep Tech Startup Policy

  • The Consortium for the National Deep Tech Startup Policy (NDTSP) has presented the Preliminary National Deep Tech Startup Policy for public discourse, aiming to bolster and cater to the specific needs of India’s deep tech startups.
  • This newly introduced policy enhances and synergizes with current Startup India programs, initiatives, and policies. Its primary focus is to cultivate a supportive environment for deep tech startups, recognizing and addressing their distinct challenges.

2. Central Government Constitutes a Committee for Updating Anti-discrimination Guidelines

  • On 2nd August, the Ministry of Education formed a Specialist Committee to reevaluate and refine the anti-discrimination guidelines, focusing on higher educational institutions and covering aspects related to the Scheduled Caste, Scheduled Tribe, OBC, individuals with disabilities, and other minority groups.
  • The Committee’s main goal is a holistic assessment of the current anti-discrimination policies and measures on campuses, pinpointing areas of improvement and providing recommendations. The refinement is meant to ensure that principles of justice, respect, and inclusivity are upheld in educational institutions.

3. Assam Government Initiates ‘Amrit Brikshya Andolan’ Drive

  • Assam’s proactive approach to improving its forest coverage and addressing climate change is reflected in the introduction of the ‘Amrit Brikshya Andolan’ campaign.
  • This significant project has the target of planting a massive 1 crore trees in a single day in September, representing a vital step towards promoting a green economy in the state and making a mark in the global climate change fight.

4. Aadi Perukku Festival Observed in Tamil Nadu

  • Aadi Perukku, known as Pathinettam Perukku, is a significant festival for the Tamil cultural group, celebrated to pay tribute to the monsoon rains and the land’s fertility. The event occurs on the 18th day of the Aadi month, which fell on August 3rd this year.
  • Typically celebrated at the end of July or the start of August, this festival emphasizes giving thanks to water sources, signaling the anticipated monsoon season.

5. GST Council’s Decision on Online Gaming Taxation

  • Following the 51st meeting, the GST Council has confirmed a 28% tax imposition on the total value of online gaming bets, effective from 1st October.
  • This resolution is in place to offer transparency concerning the taxation process related to casinos, horse racing, and online gaming. The methodology for evaluating supplies in online gaming should exclude previous winnings, focusing solely on the amount given or owed to the provider by the gamer.

6. Details on the PM YASASVI Scheme

  • Registration for the YASASVI Scheme’s scholarship program began on the NTA’s official portal on 10th August 2023. The NTA began accepting applications for the 2023 scholarship entrance exam under the PM Young Achievers Scholarship Award Scheme for Vibrant India (YASASVI).
  • Between July 11th and August 10th, 2023, applications were accepted on the official NTA website, www.yet.nta.an.in. With the PM YASASVI Scholarship test, the plan is to allocate 15,000 scholarships, ranging between Rs.75,000 to Rs.1,25,000 annually, to deserving students from classes 9-12.

7. Cheetah Casualties at Kuno National Park

  • A recent loss was reported at the Kuno National Park in Madhya Pradesh, where a female cheetah named Dhatri (Tbilisi) passed away. This unfortunate event brings the total number of cheetah deaths to nine since March, encompassing six adult cheetahs relocated from Africa and three cubs born domestically.
  • Kuno National Park’s core mission under Project Cheetah is the re-establishment of the cheetah population. Initially, the park received 20 cheetahs from Namibia and South Africa in separate phases, and currently, the park is home to 14 cheetahs.

8. Unprecedented Rainfall in Beijing

  • Beijing, the capital of China, has witnessed extreme rainfall, accumulating 744.8 millimeters for five days, marking the heaviest in the last 140 years. This rainfall was the aftermath of Typhoon Doksuri, causing severe flooding and leaving many residents in dire situations.
  • The calamity has been devastating, with 21 reported deaths and 26 individuals still unaccounted for. Both Beijing and the neighboring Hebei province faced severe inundation, damaging infrastructure and complicating rescue efforts.
