1. Former ISRO chairman receives France’s Highest Civilian Award

  • Former ISRO chairman A S Kiran Kumar was awarded with ‘Chevalier de la Légiond ‘Honneur’.
  • The Legion of Honour (Chevalier de la Légiond ‘Honneur) is the highest French order of merit for military and civil merits, established in 1802 by Napoleon Bonaparte and retained by all later French governments and régimes.
  • Aluru Seelin Kiran Kumar is an Indian space scientist and former chairman of the Indian Space Research Organisation, having assumed office on 14 January 2015. He is credited with the development of key scientific instruments aboard the Chandrayaan-1 and Mangalyaan space crafts.

2. Satellite ‘RISAT 2BR1’

  • ISRO will launch its latest radar imaging reconnaissance satellite ‘RISAT 2BR1’ in May 2019.
  • It provides all-weather surveillance using synthetic aperture radars (SAR).
  • The RISAT series are the first all-weather earth observation satellites from ISRO. Previous Indian observation satellites relied primarily on optical and spectral sensors which were hampered by cloud cover.

3. Master Hirannaiah passes away

  • Master Hirannaiah was an Indian film actor in the Kannada film industry and a theatre artist in Karnataka, India.
  • Some of the notable films of Master Hirannaiah as an actor include Re, Care of Footpath 2, No. 73, Shanthi Nivasa.

4. Rani Abbakka Force

  • Mangaluru City Police has launched an All-Women Police Patrolling Unit ‘Rani Abbakka Force’.
  • Rani Abbakka Chowta was the first Tuluva Queen of Ullal who fought the Portuguese in the latter half of the 16th century.
  • She belonged to the Chowta dynasty who ruled over parts of coastal Karnataka (Tulu Nadu), India. Their capital was Puttige.

International News

1. International Firefighters’ Day

  • International Firefighters’ Day is observed on May 4.
  • It was instituted after a proposal was emailed out across the world on January 4, 1999 due to the deaths of five firefighters in tragic circumstances in a bushfire in Australia.

2. 2019 Billboard Music Awards

  • The 2019 Billboard Music Awards ceremony was held at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas
  • Rapper Drake has created a record with the most wins ever by winning 12 honours at the Billboard Music Awards.
  • Host: Kelly Clarkson
  • Mariah Carey received the Icon Award at this year’s show.
  • Aubrey Drake Graham is a Canadian rapper, singer, songwriter, actor, producer, and entrepreneur. Drake gained recognition as an actor on the teen drama television series Degrassi: The Next Generation in the early 2000s.

3. 2019 UNESCO/Guillermo Cano World Press Freedom Prize

  • Reuters JournalistsWa Lone and KyawSoeOo are awarded the 2019 UNESCO/Guillermo Cano World Press Freedom Prize.
  • Wa Lone is a Reuters journalist with fellow reporter KyawSoeOo, was arrested on 12 December 2017 in Myanmar because of their investigation into the Rohingya Muslims massacre. A police witness testified that their arrest was a case of entrapment. It is believed to have been intended to intimidate journalists.
  • The case has received international attention. During 2018, Wa Lone and KyawSoeOo have received a number of international awards, including being listed among Time magazine’s Persons of the Year for 2018.
  • The two journalists were also awarded the Pulitzer Prize.

4. Asia Cooperation Dialogue

  • The 16th Ministerial Meeting of Asia Cooperation Dialogue (ACD) was held in Doha Qatar.
  • Gen. VK Singh led the Indian delegation.

  • The Asia Cooperation Dialogue is an inter-governmental organization created on 18 June 2002 to promote Asian cooperation at a continental level and to help integrate separate regional organizations such as ASEAN, SAARC, the Gulf Cooperation Council, Shanghai Cooperation Organisation and the Eurasian Economic Union.

  • General Vijay Kumar Singh is an Indian politician and a retired four star general in the Indian Army. Since May 26, 2014; he has served as the Minister of State for External Affairs in the NDA-led Government of India.

1. Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation’s Policy Director for India

  • The Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation has appointed Sanjay Ubale as its policy director for India.
  • Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, previously branded as the ‘William H. Gates Foundation’, is a private foundation founded by Bill and Melinda Gates. Based in Seattle, Washington, it was launched in 2000 and is reported to be the largest private foundation in the world, holding $50.7 billion in assets.

2. SBI to link its interest rates with Repo Rate

  • SBI has linked its Interest Rates on Savings Account Deposits (Large) and short-term loans to Repo Rate.
  • 3.25% per annum Interest Rates on savings accounts with deposits above ₹1 lakh.
  • Cash credit accounts and overdrafts with limits above Rs 1 lakh will have 8.25% per annum.
  • Repo rate is the rate at which RBI lends to its clients generally against government securities. Reduction in repo rate helps the commercial banks to get money at a cheaper rate and increase in repo rate discourages the commercial banks to get money as the rate increases and becomes expensive.

3. Asian College of Journalism’s Award for Investigative Journalism

  • Article ‘Coalgate 2.0’ has won the Asian College of Journalism’s Award for Investigative Journalism.
  • Article ‘Coalgate 2.0’ is authored by Indian author Nileena M. S.
  • This article investigates allotment of ‘captive coal blocks in Chhattisgarh.

4. Myntra’s New Brand Ambassadors

  • Myntra has appointed Virat Kohli and Anushka Sharma as first brand ambassadors
  • Myntra is an Indian fashion e-commerce company headquartered in Bengaluru, Karnataka, India. The company was founded in 2007 to sell personalized gift items. In May 2014, Myntra.com was acquired by Flipkart.

1. ICC Rankings

  • India has retained its Top position in the ICC Test rankings.
  • England has retained its Top position in the ICC ODI rankings.
  • Pakistan has topped the charts in ICC T20 rankings.
  • The International Cricket Council is the global governing body of cricket. It was founded as the Imperial Cricket Conference in 1909 by representatives from Australia, England and South Africa. It was renamed as the International Cricket Conference in 1965, and took up its current name in 1989.

3. Ali Aliev wrestling tournament

  • Wrestler Bajrang Punia has defeated Viktor Rassadin in the finals of men’s 65kg freestyle in Ali Aliev wrestling tournament.
  • He also won Gold in the Asian Wrestling Championships 2019 in Xi’an, China.
  • The Ali Aliev wrestling Tournament was held in Kaspiisk, Russia.
