1. Captain Shiva Chauhan: First Female Officer Assigned to Siachen
- Captain Shiva Chauhan has made history as the first female military officer to be posted to the Siachen Glacier, known as the highest battlefield in the world, in an active duty role.
2. Prime Minister Modi to Inaugurate the World’s Longest River Cruise from Varanasi to Assam
- ‘Ganga Vilas’, acclaimed to be the world’s longest luxury river cruise, is set to embark on its maiden voyage from Varanasi in Uttar Pradesh to Dibrugarh in Assam on January 13. The event will be flagged off by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
- This journey will navigate through 27 different river locks in India and Bangladesh, pausing at over 50 sites, many of which are inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List.

3. India to Introduce Hydrogen-Powered Urban Trains
- India is gearing up to become the first Asian country and the second globally to launch hydrogen-powered urban trains.
- Germany led the way in this domain, introducing its first hydrogen-powered train in September 2022.
- Ashwini Vaishnaw, the Indian Railways Minister, announced that the nation’s inaugural domestically-manufactured hydrogen trains are slated to commence operations by the end of 2023.
4. India Takes the Lead at the Asian Pacific Postal Union
- Starting this month, India will preside over the Asian Pacific Postal Union (APPU), headquartered in Bangkok, Thailand.
- On January 1, 2023, Vinay Prakash Singh assumed the role of the Secretary General of the Asian Pacific Postal Union (APPU).
- This marks a historic milestone as no Indian had previously helmed an international postal organization. Dr. Singh has been granted a 4-year tenure.
