National News

1. Armed Forces (Special Powers) Act (AFSPA)

  • The Armed Forces Special Powers Act (AFSPA) was partially removed from 3 of 9 districts of Arunachal Pradesh.
  • Armed Forces (Special Powers) Acts (AFSPA), are Acts of the Parliament of India that grant special powers to the Indian Armed Forces in which each act terms “disturbed areas”
  • According to The Disturbed Areas (Special Courts) Act, 1976 once declared ‘disturbed’, the area has to maintain status quo for a minimum of 3 months.

2. Astrologer Dr SohiniSastri

  • Astrologer Dr Sohini Sastri has been honoured with ‘Doctor of Letters (Degree) in Astrology’ by National American University, USA.
  • National American University (NAU) is an online for-profit university with locations at Ellsworth Air Force Base and King’s Bay Naval Submarine Base.

3. Bharat Stage BS VI

  • The Indian Oil Corporation (IOCL) has stated that Supply of ultra-clean BS-VI grade petrol and diesel has begun in NCR Region.
  • Bharat stage emission standards {BSES} are emission standards instituted by the Government of India to regulate the output of air pollutants from internal combustion engines and Spark-ignition engines equipment, including motor vehicles.
  • The standards and the timeline for implementation are set by the Central Pollution Control Board under the Ministry of Environment & Forests and climate change.
  • The standards, based on European regulations were first introduced in 2000. Progressively stringent norms have been rolled out since then. All new vehicles manufactured after the implementation of the norms have to be compliant with the regulations.

International News

1. International Day of Mine Awareness and Assistance in Mine Action

  • On 8 December 2005, the UN General Assembly declared that 4 April of each year shall be observed as the International Day for Mine Awareness and Assistance in Mine Action.
  • Theme :- ‘United Nations Promotes SDGs – Safe Ground – Safe Home’.
  • For over 20 years, the work of the United Nations Mine Action Service (UNMAS) has been driven by the needs of affected people and tailored to the threat of explosive hazards faced by civilians, peacekeepers and humanitarians.
  • The aim is to foster the establishment and development of national mine-action capacities in countries where mines and explosive remnants of war constitute a serious threat to the safety, health and lives of the civilian population.

2. John Dirks, Canada Gairdner Global Health Award

  • Prof Vikram Patel has been awarded 2019 John Dirks, Canada Gairdner Global Health Award.
  • He researched on global mental health and determinants of mental health problems in low-and-middle-income countries.
  • Vikram Harshad Patel is an Indian psychiatrist and researcher best known for his work on child development and mental disability in low-resource settings.
  • The Canada Gairdner International Award is given annually at a special dinner to five individuals for outstanding discoveries or contributions to medical science.
  • Receipt of the Gairdner is traditionally considered a precursor to winning the Nobel Prize in Medicine

3. First African-American Woman as the mayor of Chicago

  • Chicago has elected Lori Lightfoot, an African-American woman as its mayor for the first time.
  • Lori Lightfoot is the first black female and first openly LGBTQ leader of the city, which will now be the largest in United States history to have an openly LGBTQ, and again the largest U.S. city to be headed by a woman.
  • She is the second woman to be elected mayor of Chicago and the first woman to hold the office since the four-year term of Jane Byrne ended in 1983.

4. Nepal-India Franchise Investment Summit

  • Nepal will organise the Nepal-India Franchise Investment Summit in Kathmandu.
  • It will be in association with the Embassy of India and Federation of Nepalese Chambers of Commerce and Industry.

1. New Managing Director of LIC

  • Vipin Anand has taken charge as Managing Director of LIC of India.
  • Life Insurance Corporation of India is an Indian state-owned insurance group and investment company headquartered in Mumbai. It is the largest insurance company in India with an estimated asset value of ₹2,529,390 crore.

2. Mobile Application TikTok

  • Madras High Court has issued an interim direction to Centre to prohibit the download of TikTok App.
  • TikTok, also known as Douyin in China, is a media app for creating and sharing short videos. Owned by ByteDance, the media app was launched as Douyin in China in September 2016 and introduced to the overseas market as TikTok one year later.
  • It became the world’s most downloaded app on Apple’s App Store in the first half of 2018 with an estimated 104 million downloads, surpassing the downloads recorded by PUBG Mobile, YouTube, WhatsApp and Instagram in the same period.

3. Fitch Ratings’ Outlook for India’s GDP

  • Fitch Ratings has affirmed India’s rating unchanged at lowest investment grade of BBB- with a stable outlook.
  • GDP Growth Rate for 2019-20 :- 6.8%
  • GDP Growth Rate for 2020-21 :- 7.1%
  • Fitch Ratings Inc. is one of the “Big Three credit rating agencies”, the other two being Moody’s and Standard & Poor’s. It is one of the three nationally recognized statistical rating organizations designated by the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission in 1975. Fitch Ratings is headquartered in New York, US.

4. Ways and Means Advances (WMA)

  • RBI in consultation with Indian Government has set the limits for Ways and Means Advances (WMA) for the first half of FY 2019-20 at Rs 75000 crore.
  • Ways and means advances (WMA) is a mechanism used by Reserve Bank of India (RBI) under its credit policy to provide to States, banking with it, to help them tide over temporary mismatches in the cash flow of their receipts and payments.
  • It was introduced in 1997 to meet any temporary mismatches in the receipts and payments of the government.

1. Boardwalk Pearson Chess Title

  • Sahaj Grover has retained the Boardwalk Pearson Grandmasters chess tournament.
  • Boardwalk Pearson Grandmasters chess tournament is being held in Port Elizabeth.

2. Mike Dean 100 Premier League red cards

  • Referee Mike Dean has become the first referee to show 100 red cards in the Premier League.
  • Michael Dean is an English professional football referee who officiates primarily in the Premier League. He is based in Heswall, Wirral, and is a member of the Cheshire County Football Association.
  • The Premier League is the top level of the English football league system. Contested by 20 clubs, it operates on a system of promotion and relegation with the English Football League. The Premier League is a corporation in which the member clubs act as shareholders.

3. First Indian to be elected as a member in the FIFA Executive Council

  • Praful Patel will become the first Indian to be elected as a member in the FIFA Executive Council for a four-year term.
  • He is the current president of All India Football Federation (AIFF).
  • The All India Football Federation, also simply known as the AIFF, is the governing body of association football in India. Formed in 1937, the federation was one of founding members of the Asian Football Confederation, the overseer of football in Asia.
  • The Fédération Internationale de Football Association is an organization which describes itself as an international governing body of association football, fútsal, beach soccer, and eFootball.
