April 6, 2017-International Day of Sports for Development and Peace

  • 6th April was proclaimed as International Day of Sports for Development and Peace by The United Nation on August 23, 2013 to recognises the power of sport in promoting peace and its ability to inspire
  • The day also coincides with the first modern Olympic Games in Athens in 1896.

International Affairs
Iceland sets equal pay for men and women

  • Iceland present a bill that would require public and private businesses to prove they offer equal pay to employees and thus will be the first country in the world to do the same.
  • Iceland parliament passes the bill to provide an equal pay to men and women. The legislation would apply to discrimination based on race, national origin, religion, disability, age, sexual orientation and gender identity.

Prime Minister Lays the Foundation Stone of a Multi-Modal Terminal on River Ganga

  • Prime Minister Shri. Narendra Modi lays the foundation stone of a multi-modal terminal on River Ganga in Sahibganj district on April 6, 2017.In a series of tweets, PM Modi mentioned that construction of multi-modal terminal will create business and job opportunities in Jharkhand so as to benefit people in rural areas.
  • He also inaugurated the Govindpur-Jamtara-Dumka-Sahebganj Highway, during this visit.
    Latest approvals by Central government – April 5, 2017
  • A proposal to set up a regulator for Indian Railways to recommend passenger and freight fares and set the performance benchmarks has been approved by the Union Cabinet.
  • Cabinet approves extension of implementation of Crime and Criminal Tracking Network and Systems Project by one year and also MoU between India and Australia on cooperation in the field of Health and Medicine, MoU between the Airports Authority of India (AAI) and Civil Aviation Authority (DGAC)

Banking & Finance

  • RBI keeps repo rate unvaried at 6.25%, raises reverse repo rate to 6%-RBI Policy Review:
  • Reserve Bank of India (RBI) announced First Bi-Monthly Monetary Policy Statement for the financial year 2017-18, on 6th April 2017.This is the third straight meeting wherein the Policy Repo Rate has been kept unchanged.

Business
A landmark contract was signed by Indian Railways for Alternate Fuel

  • An agreement was signed by the Indian Railways Organization for Alternate Fuel (IROAF) with Bharat Heavy Electricals Ltd (BHEL) for constructing the 2 Megawatt roof top solar power plants under the government’s incentive scheme.
  • The plant is set to be made at Diesel-Loco Modernization Works formerly known as Diesel Component Works, Patiala and to work within next 10 months.

Awards & Recognitions

  • NTR National Awards won by both Hema Malini and S P Balasubramanyam
  • Hema Malini and S P Balasubramanyam wins the NTR National Film Award for the year 2012 and 2013 which were announced at the Film Development Corporation office in Hyderabad by Andhra Pradesh government.
  • Each NTR award winners will get Rs.5 lakh and a citation.

  • New Executive Director of RBI – Malvika Sinha
  • Malvika Sinha becomes Executive Director (ED) of RBI who was Principal Chief General Manager, Department of Cooperative Banking Supervision in the Reserve Bank of India(RBI) prior to this elevation in the post.

New tree-living crab species named Kanimaranjandu found in Kerala

  • Species named Kanimaranjandu which are the new tree-living species have been found by Scientists from the University of Kerala in Kerala. It was stated in the Journal of Crustacean Biology.

Sports
India rises to 101 in FIFA rankings, after two decades

  • After two decades, the Indian football team has risen to 101st from 132nd in the latest FIFA rankings which were released on April 6, 2017. Brazil retained its top position.
  • The Indian team also ranked 11th in Asia and the list is topped by Iran which has placed 28th position in theoverall ranking. It was achieved after the team has had 11 victories in 13 matches
