1. Neeraj Chopra’s Triumph in 2023 Doha Diamond League

  • Neeraj Chopra, the Olympic gold medalist in javelin throw, clinched the first position at the Diamond League’s inaugural event in Doha with a world-leading throw of 88.67m. He surpassed Anderson Peters from Grenada, the 2022 Doha Diamond League champion.
  • Jakub Vadlejch of the Czech Republic secured the second place with a throw of 88.63m, while Peters finished third with 85.88m.
  • Eldhose Paul, previously a winner of the Commonwealth Games triple jump, couldn’t leave a mark in his Diamond League debut, finishing 10th with a wind-affected 15.84m jump.

2. INS Magar’s Decommissioning after Serving for 36 Years

  • INS Magar, the amphibious assault ship also referred to as Landing Ship Tank (Large) in the Indian Navy, was decommissioned after 36 years of dedicated service.
  • The official retirement ceremony took place at the Southern Naval Command in Kochi.
  • Built by Garden Reach Shipbuilders & Engineers Ltd in Kolkata, the vessel was commissioned into the Navy on 18 July 1987 by Admiral R H Tahiliani, after its launch on 16th November 1984.

3. Discovery of Ancient Civilization in Bandhavgarh National Park

  • Archaeologists made noteworthy discoveries in Bandhavgarh National Park in Madhya Pradesh, unveiling rock paintings estimated to be 1,500 years old and several ancient man-made water reservoirs believed to be around 1,800-2,000 years old.
  • Located in the Umaria district, Bandhavgarh National Park was established as a national park in 1968 and later recognized as a Tiger Reserve in 1993. It is famous for its Royal Bengal Tigers population.

4. Article 355 Implemented in Manipur by Central Government

  • The Central Government enforced Article 355 in Manipur to take charge of the state’s security situation.
  • Article 355, a segment of the emergency protocols in the Indian Constitution spanning Articles 352 to 360, obliges the central government to intervene in a state’s matters to counter internal or external threats.
  • It arms the federal government with the power to act when a state’s security is jeopardized.

National & International Organizations

5. WHO Announces the Conclusion of the Covid-19 Global Health Emergency

  • The World Health Organization (WHO) declared that the Covid-19 pandemic is no longer a global health emergency.
  • This significant decision, signaling a step towards concluding the pandemic, comes three years after WHO’s first alert about the virus on 30th January 2020.
  • WHO’s primary headquarters is located in Geneva, Switzerland.

6. Observance of International No Diet Day on 6 May

  • 6 May is celebrated globally as International No Diet Day, accentuating body acceptance and fostering a positive body image.
  • This day serves as a reminder to challenge societal beauty standards that might encourage unhealthy dietary habits.
  • International No Diet Day was initiated in 1992 by British feminist Mary Evans Young. Having struggled with an eating disorder herself, Young was keen on dedicating a day to honor bodies of all shapes and sizes.
