National News

1.Neiphiu Rio has been appointed as the CM of Nagaland.

  • Nagaland Governor PB Acharya has appointed Neiphiu Rio as the new Chief Minister of the state. Mr Rio will replace TR Zeliang.
  • The Governor has also requested Mr Rio to prove his majority on the floor of the House on or before 16th of March.

2.Tibet cancels event after India asks officials to keep away.

  • The Tibetan government-in-exile has cancelled an event in Delhi which was to be attended by Dalai Lama to commemorate his 60 years in exile in India.
  • This comes after asked its officials to keep away from events organized by Tibetan leaders as it is a “sensitive time” for relations with China.

3.Sonia Gandhi invites all opposition leaders for dinner.

  • The party leader said, “It would not only be a dinner, but also showcase the strength of opposition parties who would like to come together to form a front against the misrule of BJP”.
  • Reportedly, several leaders have confirmed their attendance.

4.Jawan’s pay cut for not using Shri before PM’s name revoked.

  • A BSF jawan was penalized for not putting ‘honorable’ or ‘Shri’ while referring to PM Modi.
  • The BSF later rescinded the order and said the concerned commandant was cautioned for not dealing with the matter judiciously.

International News

1.Iraq becomes India’s biggest oil supplier.

  • Iraq, by overtaking Saudi Arabia, has become India’s biggest crude oil supplier with a wide margin in this current financial year.
  • Iraq supplied 38.9 million tonnes of oil, which was more than 20% of country’s oil needs.

2.Pak court rules govt cannot arrest Hafiz Saeed.

  • The Lahore High Court ruled that neither the Pakistani nor the Punjab govt can arrest or put 26/11 Mumbai terror attack mastermind hafiz Saeed under house arrest.
  • A petition was filed by Jamaat-ud-Dawa chief in which he sought protection against his possible arrest under international pressure.

3.Sri Lanka blocks social media sites amid emergency.

  • The Sri Lankan govt blocked social media sites including Facebook, to stop the spread of violence, after imposing a 10-day nation-wide emergency.
  • The emergency was imposed over clashes between the Buddhist and Muslim communities in the Kandy district.

4.Washington, 1st US state to set net neutrality rules.

  • Washington became the first US state to set up its own net-neutrality requirements.
  • The US regulators had in December last year repealed the Obama-era rules that banned internet providers from interfering with online traffic.

Business News
1.India’s membership approved by European Development Bank.

  • After the shareholders of the international financial institution gave their nod to India’s candidature , India is set to become the 69th member of the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development(EBRD).
  • The EBRD’s Board of Governors, which represents all the existing shareholders of the UK-based bank, voted in favour of India’s membership application.

2.Forbes Billionaires List 2018 released.

  • Amazon founder Jeff Bezos is the world’s richest man and has topped the list. Bill Gates is second while Mark Zuckerberg ranked fifth.
  • Mukesh Ambani is on 19th position in the list, becoming the richest Indian while Vijay Shekhar Sharma, the Founder of mobile payments startup Paytm, became India’s youngest billionaire.

3.Govt asked passport details of borrowers with loans over Rs.50 crore.

  • According to the reports, the govt has asked the state-owned banks to collect passport details of all borrowers with loans worth over Rs.50 crore within 45 days.
  • It said the loan application form should be modified to incorporate passport details of borrowers.

4.Vijay Mallya’s superyacht seized over wage dispute.

  • Superyacht worth $93 million has been impounded in Malta by a trade union over non-payment of more than $1 million in wages to the crew.
  • More than 40 crew have not been paid since September last year.

Sports News
1.Ronaldo equals scoring record as Real Madrid reach CL last 8.

  • Real Madrid sealed a 5-2 aggregate win over PSG to enter the Champions League quarter-finals for the eighth straight season.
  • The second leg saw Cristiano Ronaldo become only the second player in the CL history to score nine consecutive matches after Ruud van Nistelrooy(Manchester United, 2002-03).

2.2-times Cricket WC winner Viv Richards also played FIFA WC.

  • Cricket legend Viv Richards is the only man to play in cricket and football World Cups.He celebrated his 66th birthday today
  • Richards won the first two editions of the Cricket WC with West Indies and was apart of Antigua’s squad in the 1974 FIFA WC qualifiers.

3.Pay of top Indian cricketers hiked from Rs.2 crore to Rs.7 crore.

  • BCCI has hiked the pay of Grade A+ cricketers from Rs.2 crore to Rs.7 crore in the new contract system.
  • The newly incorporated A+ bracket includes Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma, Shikhar Dhawan, Bhuvaneshwar Kumar and Jasprit Bumrah.
