National News

1. Projection of India’s Per Capita Income Growth

  • Standard Chartered Bank’s research report predicts a 70% surge in India’s per capita income by 2030, reaching approximately 4,000 dollars, up from the current 2,450 dollars.
  • The anticipated growth is expected to transition India into a middle-income economy with a 6 trillion dollar GDP, half of which could be attributed to household consumption.
  • India’s per capita GDP has been rising steadily, from 460 dollars in 2001 to 1,413 dollars in 2011, and further to 2,150 dollars in 2021.
  • The doubling of external trade to 2.1 trillion dollars by 2030 is seen as a key driver in this significant economic advancement.

2. Inauguration of the 20th Annual Conference of the Commonwealth Parliamentary Association, India Region by Om Birla

  • Speaker of Lok Sabha, Om Birla, inaugurated the 20th annual conference of the Commonwealth Parliamentary Association, India Region.
  • The conference focuses on addressing natural disasters and management strategies, with a particular emphasis on the northeast region.
  • It highlighted the importance of regional cooperation and connectivity, aligning with the Act East policy to foster economic and social integration in the North East.

National Developments:

  1. Union Minister Sarbananda Sonowal inaugurated “Costa Serena,” India’s first international cruise liner, in Mumbai. The ship, built by Fincantieri in Italy and first launched in Marseille, France, represents a landmark achievement in India’s maritime sector.
  2. Prime Minister Narendra Modi extended the Pradhan Mantri Garib Kalyan Anna Yojana (PMGKAY) until 2028. Initially set to end in December 2023, this scheme is part of a ₹2 lakh crore investment by the Ministry of Consumer Affairs, Food, and Public Distribution for food subsidies under NFSA and other welfare programs.
  3. Begun in 2020 during the COVID-19 pandemic, the PMGKAY, managed by the Department of Food and Public Distribution, provides 5 kg of free food grain monthly to National Food Security Act (NFSA) 2013 beneficiaries.
  4. Norway pledged USD 44.7 million over three years to support ‘The Hunger Project’ in Uttarakhand, focusing on food security and environmental protection. The project aims to enhance productivity for small-scale food producers and develop local value chains and markets.
  5. COLORS TV partnered with the Ministry of Women and Child Development to promote the Beti Bachao, Beti Padhao (BBBP) initiative. The partnership includes a new show “Doree,” starting November 6th, 2023, to raise awareness about girl child abandonment.

International Affairs:

  1. Swedish defense company Saab AB received approval for 100% foreign direct investment (FDI) in India’s defense sector, marking a first for a foreign firm in this area.
