1. Leadership Change at Canara Bank
- K Satyanarayana Raju has taken the helm as the new Chief Executive Officer and Managing Director of Canara Bank, starting February 7, 2023, appointed by the Union government.
- L V Prabhakar, the former CEO, concluded his tenure on December 31, 2022.
- Boasting 33 years in banking, Raju previously served as Canara Bank’s executive director and began his professional journey at Vijaya Bank in 1988. He later ascended to the role of chief GM at the Bank of Baroda.
National News
2. Telangana Pioneers a New Mobility Cluster
- Telangana unveils the nation’s pioneering ‘Telangana Mobility Valley’ (TMV), a hub for innovative mobility.
- With ambitions to attract investments approximating Rs 50,000 crore and generate over 400,000 jobs in the next five years, the state is poised for growth.
- The TMV is envisioned to specialize in sustainable mobility domains, such as Electric Vehicles, Advanced Cell Chemistry, Hydrogen fuel cells, and more.
- Additionally, the Kalam Centre For Automotive Excellence was inaugurated to provide training in e-Mobility to the next generation.
3. DGGI and NFSU Collaboration on Digital Forensic Labs
- A Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) is established between the Directorate General of GST Intelligence (DGGI) and the National Forensic Sciences University (NFSU).
- This collaboration aims to set up digital forensic labs, foster research, facilitate training, and provide technical expertise in the domain.
- DGGI, a branch of the Central Board of Indirect Taxes and Customs (CBIC), dedicates its efforts to gather intelligence and combat GST evasion.
4. IIT Madras and ISRO Join Hands for Astronaut Training
- ISRO and IIT Madras have formed a partnership to craft astronaut training programs utilizing augmented reality (AR), virtual reality (VR), and mixed reality (MR) technologies.
- ISRO intends to leverage innovative tech from IIT Madras’s eXperiential Technology Innovation Centre (XTIC) to augment R&D in Extended Reality.
- This alliance seeks to simulate human physiology, space systems, outreach campaigns, design optimization, and to train ISRO professionals in XR system development.
5. Reliance Reveals India’s Premier Hydrogen Engine
- Reliance Industries Ltd (RIL) introduced India’s first hydrogen-driven internal combustion engine technology, tailored for heavy-duty vehicles.
- The launch was graced by Prime Minister Narendra Modi during the India Energy Week in Bangalore.
- These hydrogen-powered trucks offer near-zero emissions, comparable performance to traditional diesel trucks, reduced noise, and are foreseen to have lowered operational expenses, heralding a new era in eco-friendly transportation.

6. RBI’s Repo Rate Hike
- The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has announced an increase in the repo rate by 0.25%, aiming to mitigate inflation as revealed in their recent monetary policy review.
- Four members out of the six in the Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) voted in favor of this change. The RBI is on a trajectory of gradually rolling back monetary accommodation.
- Since May 2022, the interest rate has witnessed its sixth surge. The short-term lending rate also observed a considerable increase of 250 basis points to counter inflationary pressures.
