1. Indian Army’s Introduction to Low-Smoke Kerosene Oil from BPCL

  • BPCL, the state-owned refinery, has presented a low-smoke version of its Superior Kerosene Oil (SKO) for the Indian Army stationed in Jammu.
  • This marks BPCL as the first oil marketing company (OMC) to supply the Army with the new LSLA grade SKO materials, dramatically enhancing the serving environment by mitigating the issues of smoke and odor from SKO usage.
  • Compared to regular kerosene that emits significant smoke and poses health risks at high altitudes with reduced oxygen levels, low-smoke kerosene provides a cleaner and healthier fuel alternative for soldiers.

2. India’s Car Market Outranks Japan’s

  • According to data published by Nikkei Asia, India surpassed Japan last year to become the world’s third-largest car market.
  • Approximately 4.25 million new vehicles were sold in India, edging out Japan’s 4.2 million. The Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers reported the sale of 4.13 million vehicles in India from January to November 2022 alone.
  • China continued to dominate the global automotive market in 2021 with a staggering 26.27 million units sold, while the USA secured the second position selling 15.4 million cars. Japan recorded 4.44 million vehicle sales.
  • Following a financial downturn in the nonbank sector in 2019, car sales in India plummeted below 4 million from almost 4.4 million in 2018. This further declined to under 3 million in 2020 due to Covid-related restrictions.

3. Suryakumar Yadav’s T20I Milestone

  • Indian batsman Suryakumar Yadav has achieved a new record by reaching 1,500 runs in international T20 cricket in the fewest balls, having faced only 843 deliveries.
  • Throughout 45 matches and 43 innings, Suryakumar accumulated 1,578 runs, averaging an impressive 46.41.

4. Khelo India National Women’s Kho Kho League in Punjab

  • The Kho Kho Federation of India will organize the Khelo India Senior Women National Kho Kho League at Chandigarh University, Punjab, from January 10-13, 2023.
  • The league, which will be divided into three segments, is fully funded by the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports. Another leg of the Kho Kho Women’s League for junior and sub-junior age groups is scheduled at the Alberta Ekka Kho Kho stadium in Hotwar, Ranchi, from January 16-19, 2023.

5. Passing of Former West Bengal Governor Keshari Nath Tripathi

  • Veteran BJP politician Keshari Nath Tripathi, aged 88, passed away in Prayagraj, Uttar Pradesh.
  • Tripathi served as the Governor of West Bengal from 2014 to 2019. Prior to this, he held gubernatorial posts in Bihar, Meghalaya, and Mizoram, and was also a prominent figure as the Speaker of the UP legislative assembly and a senior advocate at the Allahabad High Court.
  • His literary contributions include several books like “The Age of Wings,” “Sanchayita: Kesharinath Tripathi,” and “Destination God.”
