Article Name:Seat reservations and corruption: The law of unintended consequences

Author name: Jug Suraiya
Source: The Times of India
Category: Politics

Summary for this article:

In this article, the writer states the dark side of the caste based reservation system in India. Stating an example of a student who had scored 85% marks in his 10th examination, and who was trying to get an admission to a polytechnic three year I.T. course, finds himself in a situation where even with his high grades, the principal demands a fee of 1 lakh above the normal fees of the institution,as 80% of the seats are reserved by the SC/ST castes. The student’s father whose monthly income is 16,000 can never be in a position to secure an admission for his son.

The caste based reservation system in India has shrunk the supply of the merit based seats in the educational institutions inspite of the ever increasing demand. Corruption has dug its roots here as well as the cash ‘premium’ of merit has been introduced into our educational system.

Article Name:Smartphone capers: How Digital India can end up wasting tax payers’ money¬¬¬
Author name: Radhika Vaz
Source: The Times of India
Category: Society and Culture

Summary for this article :

The article very satirically brings to light the police action on a comedian who had photoshopped dog ears and a snout an image of our Great Leader and then tweeted it.

The writer says how a complaint on the above act by the comedian was reported by some do-gooder on Twitter, snitched on the comedian to the Mumbai police.

The writer says that while there are serious crimes happening across the nation that needs the police attention, the police are busy focussing their attention on something in which even the victim, on whom the Photoshop was done has not objected to this representation. The police do not have free hours to focus on matters that are hardly serious crimes; they are in a profession that keeps them occupied for long hours.

A dog eared cartoon having being filed as a serious offence could only mean two things – Either the police aren’t focussed in effective prioritisation or they are tuning themselves as per the Politicians ask.

Words to learn from this article :

Snitch: A betrayer
Obscene: Something that is very offensive
Incite: Something that causes someone to act or behave in a violent or harmful manner
depravity: Deprived of morality
