Word-1: Indebtedness
Meaning: The feeling of being grateful to somebody/something for their help, advice, influence, etc.
Synonyms: Debt, liability, debt, obligation, responsibility, etc.
Usage Examples:
1. Every social relationship entails a state of indebtedness, just as every form of indebtedness entails a social relationship.
2. Greece has become a symbol of government indebtedness.
3. A security is the evidence of indebtedness or a certificate of interest in a profit-sharing contract.
Word-2: Impending
Meaning: If something is impending, it is about to happen.
Synonyms: Approaching, brewing, imminent, looming, coming, gathering, hovering, menacing, etc.
Usage Examples:
1. A dispute over impending Texas statehood sparked the US-Mexican War of 1846-48.
2. He felt called to write to all his fellow investors, warning them of the impending crisis.
3. A red morning sky is a sign of an impending storm.
Word-3: Autarky
Meaning: The condition of self-sufficiency, especially economic, as applied to a nation.
Synonyms: self-sufficiency, independence, autarchy, self-reliance
Usage Examples:
1. As well as imposing capital controls, countries might retreat towards autarky by raising retaliatory tariffs.
2. What the farmer values still is the cash income beyond autarky.
3. Figures on the decline in world trade are horrible for anybody except anti – globalisation advocates of autarky.
Word-4: Moribund
Meaning: To describe a business, market, etc., that is not active or successful.
Synonyms: At death’s door, at the rope’s end, declining, done for, doomed, expiring, fading, fated, going, etc.
Usage Examples:
1. A cut in interest rates will help the country’s moribund housing market.
2. It has staged a remarkable recovery from the moribund state of the late fifties and early sixties.
3. Chancellor Norman Lamont is being urged to boost the moribund housing market in his autumn statement on November 12.
Word-5: Wrest
Meaning: To pull, force, or move by violent wringing or twisting movements.
Synonyms: Exact, extort, extract, seize, usurp, wrench, wring, falsify, force, rend, etc.
Usage Examples:
1. I tried to wrest the gun from his hands.
2. For the past year, he has been trying to wrest control from the central government.
3. He was attacked by a security man who tried to wrest away a gas cartridge.
Word-6: Regionalism
Meaning: The theory or practice of regional rather than central systems of administration or economic, cultural, or political affiliation.
Synonyms: localism, provincialism
Usage Examples:
1. What are the implications for the state of such contemporary issues as security, regionalism, and the international character of the economy?
2. There is a sense in which all planning is implicit regionalism, though the reverse is not true.
3. Because of the invariable growth of the counteracting force known as Regionalism, or Nationalism, the Spiritual Power cannot prevail.
Word-7: Derisking
Meaning: To take steps to make something less risky or less likely to involve a financial loss in a business.
Synonyms: guard, protect, plan, regulate, mitigate
Usage Examples:
1. The buzzword is ‘de-risk’, not ‘distress’, and price reductions are ‘corrections’ rather than ‘discounts’.
2. If you are looking to ‘de-risk’ your portfolio, then absolute return funds can provide diversification.
3. As companies try to de-risk their pension involvement, this could become a blueprint for others to follow.
Word-8: Undermining
Meaning: To make someone less confident, powerful, or likely to succeed.
Synonyms: Subversion, overthrow, wrecking, demolition, destruction, impairment, injury, mischief, subversiveness, etc.
Usage Examples:
1. Lax local authority policies and the undermining of policies of restraint on appeal severely undermine processes of urban regeneration.
2. The undermining of self-esteem may lead to assumptions about the reactions of others that are unjustified.
3. The fears always involve undermining male solidarity and dominance.
Word-9: Drumbeat
Meaning: A rapid or overwhelming outpouring of many things at once.
Synonyms: Barrage, flurry, bombardment, outpouring, deluge
Usage Examples:
1. Before the crisis drumbeat intensifies, a few facts are worth remembering.
2. A drumbeat of bad news about Japan’s economy is hitting the yen.
3. This effort is part of a more generalized drumbeat of criticism about one-parent families.
