1. Onus
• Something that is one’s duty or responsibility.
Usage: The onus is on you to show that you have suffered the loss.
2. Shadow Banking
• The shadow banking system is a term for the collection of non-bank financial intermediaries that provide services similar to traditional commercial banks but outside normal banking regulations.
3. Stand pat
• Stick stubbornly to one’s opinion or decision.
Usage: The decision to stand pat highlights the lack of coordination between the BOJ and the government to pull the world’s second-biggest economy out of recession.
4. Abeyance
• A state of temporary disuse or suspension.
Usage: He ordered all other developmental work to be held in abeyance.
5. Tardiness
• Tardiness is the habit of being late or delaying arrival. Being late as a form of misconduct may be formally punishable in various arrangements, such as workplace, school, etc. An opposite personality trait is punctuality.
Usage: Because most schools have a rule about students arriving on time, teachers do not tolerate tardiness
6. CapEx cycle
• CapEx, are funds used by a company to acquire, upgrade, and maintain physical assets such as property, buildings, an industrial plant, technology, or equipment.
• CapEx is often used to undertake new projects or investments by the firm.
7. Ultra Vires
• Ultra vires is a Latin phrase meaning “beyond the powers”.
• An act which requires legal authority but is done without it is characterised in law as ultra vires. Its opposite, an act done under proper authority, is intra vires.
Usage: As a result, a taxpayer who has made a payment pursuant to ultra vires legislation has a right to restitution

• Macro-prudential regulation is the approach to financial regulation that aims to mitigate risk to the financial system as a whole or systemic risk.
9. Precarious
• Not securely held or in position
• Dangerously likely to fall or collapse
• Uncertain
Usage: Wahid, at the head of an unstable multi-party coalition, is attempting a precarious political balancing act.
10. Anaemic
• Lacking in colour, spirit, or vitality
• Suffering from anaemia
Usage: He is barely recognisable among the grime, dressed in filthy rags and as anaemic and leaden as his surroundings.

11. Taproot
• A taproot is a large, central, and dominant root from which other roots sprout laterally. Typically a taproot is somewhat straight and very thick, is tapering in shape, and grows directly downward.
