1. Dog-whistle politics
• Dog-whistle politics is political messaging employing coded language that appears to mean one thing to the general population but has an additional, different, or more specific resonance for a targeted subgroup.
• The analogy is to a dog whistle, whose ultrasonic tone is heard by dogs but inaudible to humans.
2. Roughshod
• Having shoes with nail heads projecting to prevent slipping.
Usage: They are now putting out the view that management rode roughshod over the wishes of councillors but this couldn’t be further from the truth
3. Trot
• Run at a moderate pace with short steps.
Usage: The child trotted across the hall obediently.
Synonyms: run, jog, jogtrot.
4. Devout
• Having or showing deep religious feeling or commitment.
Usage: She was a devout Catholic.
• Totally committed to a cause or belief.
Usage: The most devout environmentalist.
5. Despotism
• Despotism is a form of government in which a single entity rules with absolute power. Normally, that entity is an individual, the despot, as in an autocracy, but societies which limit respect and power to specific groups have also been called despotic.
Usage: The primary cause of all this danger is the Arab world’s endemic despotism, corruption, poverty, and economic stagnation
6. Invective
• Invective is abusive, reproachful, or venomous language used to express blame or censure.
• A form of rude expression or discourse intended to offend or hurt.
• Vituperation
Usage: Both load up their arguments with gobs of personal invective, which also makes me suspicious of their arguments.
7. Solipsism
• Solipsism is the philosophical idea that only one’s mind is sure to exist.
• As an epistemological position, solipsism holds that knowledge of anything outside one’s own mind is unsure; the external world and other minds cannot be known and might not exist outside the mind.
8. Chimera
• A chimera is essentially a single organism that’s made up of cells from two or more individuals that is, it contains two sets of DNA, with the code to make two separate organisms.
• One way that chimeras can happen naturally in humans is that a fetus can absorb its twin.
Usage: The undead monster had a plan, and part of that plan was destroying the Chimera Queen
9. Detract
• Diminish the worth or value of a quality or achievement.
Usage: These quibbles in no way detract from her achievement.
Synonyms: belittle, take away from, and diminish.
10. Telltale
• A person, especially a child, who reports others’ wrongdoings or reveals their secrets.
• Revealing, indicating, or betraying something.
Usage: The telltale bulge of a concealed weapon.
11. Cordon
• A line or circle of police, soldiers, or guards preventing access to or from an area or building.
Usage: The crowd was halted in front of the police cordon.
Synonyms: barrier, line, column, row.
12. Flagrant
• Of an action considered wrong or immoral conspicuously or obviously offensive.
Usage: A flagrant violation of the law.
13. Burgeon
• Begin to grow or increase rapidly.
Usage: Manufacturers are keen to cash in on the burgeoning demand.
Synonyms: increase exponentially, expand, spring up, shoot up, swell, explode, boom, mushroom, and proliferate.
