Word-1: Demographic
Meaning: The study of a population based on factors such as age, sex, and race.
Usage Examples:
1. Most of our listeners are in the 15-19 demographic.
2. Current demographic trends suggest that fewer school leavers will come into the workforce in twenty years.
3. There have been monumental social and demographic changes in the state.
Word-2: Pandemic
Meaning: A widespread occurrence of an infectious disease over a whole country or the world at a particular time.
Synonyms: Widespread, epidemic, prevalent, rampant, universal, rife, etc.
Usage Examples:
1. H2 viruses may also pose a pandemic threat.
2. Nobody guessed that such a rare disease would become a pandemic.
3. AIDS will surpass the Black Death as the world’s worst pandemic.
Word-3: Concurred
Meaning: To agree or have the same opinion as someone else.
Synonyms: Coincide, unite, accord, collaborate, assent, acquiesce, etc.
Usage Examples:
1. So many things concurred to give rise to the problem.
2. The two judges concurred on the ruling.
3. After looking at the jug, Faulkner concurred that it was late Roman third or fourth century.
Word-4: Provocation
Meaning: An action or statement that is intended to make someone angry.
Synonyms: Affront, harassment, insult, indignity, annoyance, etc.
Usage Examples:
1. This provocation contains a temptation for the president.
2. Proponents of provocation testing accepted the protocol, and clinicians who used this method participated in the study.
3. He would lose his temper at the slightest provocation.
Word-5: Discretion
Meaning: The power or right to decide or act according to one’s own judgment; freedom of judgment or choice.
Synonyms: Attention, foresight, maturity, prudence, responsibility, Wisdom, vigilance, etc.
Usage Examples:
1. When exercising its discretion, the court will have regard to all the circumstances.
2. I hope I may trust your discretion.
3. The committee has the absolute discretion to refuse applications.
Word-6: Robust
Meaning: Strong and healthy or strong and unlikely to break or fail.
Synonyms: Booming, hearty, hefty, potent, powerful, sturdy, tough, etc.
Usage Examples:
1. Her brother Alex, two years older and much more robust in temperament, was her bulwark against the world.
2. A British Foreign Office minister has made a robust defence of the agreement.
3. He was not physically robust, and his main recreation was playing bridge and parlour games.
Word-7: Adverse
Meaning: Having a negative or harmful effect on something.
Synonyms: Conflicting, negative, detrimental, disadvantageous, inimical, injurious, etc.
Usage Examples:
1. They fear it could have an adverse effect on global financial markets.
2. Lack of money will have an adverse effect on our research programme.
3. Inflation is considered to be undesirable because of its adverse effects on income distribution.
Word-8: Unilateral
Meaning: Relating to, occurring on, or involving one side only.
Synonyms: One-sided, independent.
Usage Examples:
1. There is little cooperation in the social sense- only obedience or unilateral respect.
2. There is a wide diversity of opinions on unilateral disarmament.
3. As late as last year, a narrow conference majority wanted to hold the party to unilateral nuclear disarmament.
Word-9: Edict
Meaning: An official order, especially one given forcefully and unfairly.
Synonyms: Commandment, decree, directive, injunction, judgement, mandate, ruling, etc.
Usage Examples:
1. And edict is retroactive, covering 130 companies listed on mainland stock markets since 2006.
2. There, I predict that any such legislative edict would be tossed out on its ear.
3. He issued an edict that none of his writings be destroyed.
