Word-1: Scrutiny
Meaning: The careful and detailed examination of something to get information about it.
Synonyms: Analysis, audit, search, review, inspection, investigation, etc.
Usage Examples:
1. Foreign policy has come under close scrutiny recently.
2. The offer will face scrutiny under competition rules.
3. At a deeper level, however, the mentally abnormal female offender concept has come under scrutiny.

Word-2: Cohesive
Meaning: Describes something that sticks together literally or figuratively.
Synonyms: Close-knit, united.
Usage Examples:
1. The gradual development of cohesive political units with important leaders of lineages will have extended and strengthened this pattern.
2. Highly cohesive groups show strong loyalty to their members and adherence to group norms.
3. Historically, sport has been a cohesive force in international relations.

Word-3: Detrimental
Meaning: Implies obvious harmfulness to something specified.
Synonyms: Adverse, harmful, inimical, disturbing, destructive, etc.
Usage Examples:
1. This is obviously detrimental to textile exports from the region.
2. The application with a particularly detrimental effect on operators’ jobs was the biscuit dough mixing automation.
3. Many industrial activities impose external effects, usually detrimental ones, on the wider community.

Word-4: Unilateral
Meaning: Relating to, occurring on, or involving one side only.
Synonyms: One-sided, independent.
Usage Examples:
1. There is little cooperation in the social sense- only obedience or unilateral respect.
2. There is a wide diversity of opinions on unilateral disarmament.
3. As late as last year, a narrow conference majority wanted to hold the party to unilateral nuclear disarmament.

Word-5: Crowdsourced
Meaning: This is the practice of obtaining needed services, ideas, or content by soliciting contributions from a large group.
Synonyms: Participate, involve, join, do, engage in, enter on, take part, etc.
Usage Examples:
1. A crowdsourced radio station with a web-based interface has found a way to democratize sound waves and captivate that 18-35-year-old audience.
2. A small but exciting survey run by crowdsourced copy editing service GooseGrade concludes that they do.
3. This project came hot on the heels of Penguin’s crowdsourced Wikinovel, A Million Penguins (2008).

Word-6: Watchdog
Meaning: A person or committee whose job is to ensure that companies do not act illegally or irresponsibly.
Synonyms: Curator, keeper, protector, warden, steward, overseer, etc.
Usage Examples:
1. Health professionals and watchdog groups say children are influenced by advertising in hoardings, newspapers, and magazines.
2. Since then, the Financial Services Authority, the chief watchdog, has been trying to broker a rescue deal.
3. They also notify the government’s other watchdog body the Genetic Manipulation Advisory Group.

Word-7: Expansionist
Meaning: A person or organization that supports increasing the amount of land ruled by a country, or the business done by a company.
Synonyms: Imperialism, development, progress, economic expansion.
Usage Examples:
1. Technological change, especially in military weapons, impeded the new expansionism.
2. Adults, particularly adult women, subscribe to this expansionism for themselves without question.
3. It was a view not unlike that of the proponents of Athenian expansionism during the time of Thucydides.

Word-8: Oligarchs
Meaning: Someone who is extremely rich and powerful, especially a person from Russia who became rich after the end of the former Soviet Union.
Synonyms: Authoritarian, autocrat, commander, despot, etc.
Usage Examples:
1. After reining in the regional barons and tackling the business oligarchs, Mr Putin read the riot act to the generals.
2. They fill their campaign coffers with money from oligarchs and timber, railroad, utilities and mining monopolists.
3. The wandering Saddhu with a begging bowl is profoundly eco-friendly, while your Bonos and Geldofs, not to mention your yacht-owning oligarchs, consume enormous amounts of oil.

Word-9: Hegemony
Meaning: The dominance of one group over another, often supported by legitimating norms and ideas.
Synonyms: Authority, command, leadership, power, predominance.
Usage Examples:
1. Britain, France, the United States and Japan all aspired to hegemony after the end of World War I.
2. Each of them is part and parcel of the turn-of-the-century crisis in the hegemony of the bourgeoisie.
3. For the single greatest cultural movement of the twentieth century is the rise and global hegemony of black music.
