Word-1: Sterling
Meaning: Means very well in quality; used to describe someone’s work or character.
Synonyms: Admirable, excellent, first-rate, magnificent, marvellous, outstanding, splendid, stunning, choice, fine, grand, superior, etc.
Usage Examples:
1. It is said that the pound sterling will be upvalued.
2. Any devaluation of sterling would make it even more difficult to keep inflation low.
3. Sterling took a battering yesterday as worries grew about Britain’s economy.

Word-2: Spur
Meaning: Something that encourages an activity or development or makes it develops faster.
Synonyms: Activation, actuation, catalyst, excitant, goad, goose, impetus, impulse, incentive, incitation, inducement, motivation, etc.
Usage Examples:
1. On the spur of the moment, they decided to hold a fancy dress party.
2. We just jumped in a car on the spur of the moment and drove to the seaside.
3. This report could spur some buying in corn futures when today’s market opens.

Word-3: Colonial
Meaning: Involving a period of political control by a more powerful country.
Synonyms: Crude, dependent, dominion, emigrant, frontier, immigrant, pilgrim, pioneer, primitive, provincial, puritan, territorial, wild, etc.
Usage Examples:
1. Such attitudes are a legacy from colonial times.
2. The former colonial possessions are now independent states.
3. The Colonial Office was absorbed into the Foreign Office.

Word-4: Entail
Meaning: To cause or involve by necessity or as a consequence / to impose as a burden.
Synonyms: Bring about, call for, encompass, involve, lead to, necessitate, require, cause, demand, entangle, evoke, impose, occasion, tangle, give rise to.
Usage Examples:
1. On the contrary, a given boundary may entail a combination of spatial, technical and social elements in different mixes.
2. Any price below the equilibrium price will entail a shortage; the quantity demanded will exceed the amount supplied.
3. Depending on the political system, this might entail voting and campaign activities to influence the selection and action of political authorities.

Word-5: Repercussions
Meaning: The effect an action, event, or decision has on something, especially a harmful effect.
Synonyms: Impact, reaction, chain reaction, influence, effect, side effect, reverberation, backlash, feedback, kickback, rebound, mark, imprint, recoil, result, echo, flak, etc.
Usage Examples:
1. The loyal state governors and military leaders in various localities successfully met minor repercussions of the Paredes and Marquez revolts.
2. Repercussions were also felt in Tabasco, where General Ignacio Martinez led an uprising of short duration.
3. Repercussions from the war roll far beyond the sorrow of families directly touched by 15 months of fighting.

Word-6: Deceptive
Meaning: Tending or having the power to cause someone to accept as true or valid what is false or invalid.
Synonyms: Ambiguous, deceitful, disingenuous, false, fraudulent, misleading, slick, sneaky, subtle, tricky, underhanded, unreliable, astucious, beguiling, bum, catchy, crafty, cunning, deceiving, etc.
Usage Examples:
1. The size of the neat, compact body is deceptive: the Devon can weigh more than a Hereford or Beef Shorthorn.
2. Armed with such a precept, many doctors may slip into deceptive practices.
3. Gwen’s students may look angelic, but appearances can be deceptive.

Word-7: Perpetuate
Meaning: To enable or allow the continuation into the future; keep alive.
Synonyms: Bolster, maintain, preserve, conserve, continue, eternalise, eternise, immortalise, keep, secure, support, sustain, keep alive, keep in existence, keep up.
Usage Examples:
1. Receiving maintenance payments would perpetuate this link and give him unwelcome paternity rights.
2. The proposed law will perpetuate existing economic and class inequalities.
3. We can neither perpetuate excessive support nor penalise the most efficient producers.

Word-8: Hindrance
Meaning: Something that makes it more difficult for you to do something or for something to develop.
Synonyms: Barrier, deterrent, drawback, handicap, hitch, impediment, interference, interruption, obstacle, snag, stumbling block, albatross, baggage, bar, clog, crimp, drag, encumbrance, glitch, etc.
Usage Examples:
1. The banners themselves aren’t usually a hindrance, but sometimes the mechanism of getting them to you can cause nasty crashes.
2. New regulations will allow residents to travel between member states without hindrance.
3. Having a car in the city might prove a hindrance.

Word-9: Anomaly
Meaning: A person or thing different from what is usual, not in agreement with something else and therefore not satisfactory.
Synonyms: Aberration, abnormality, deviation, inconsistency, irregularity, oddity, rarity, departure, eccentricity, exception, incongruity, peculiarity, unorthodoxy, unconformity.
Usage Examples:
1. The glorious anomaly of a fake tropical city with a mild desert climate brought people from everywhere.
2. Gel mobility anomaly is detected only in cases where the distance of the two elements is in an appropriate helical phase.
3. The most striking anomaly of Labour’s plans is how it treats millionaires living off unearned income.
