Word-1: Encroaching
Meaning: To take control or possession of something in a gradual way and often without being noticed.
Synonyms: Combative, contentious, destructive, intrusive, threatening, advancing, antipathetic, assailing, attacking, barbaric, bellicose, disruptive, disturbing, hawkish, etc.
Usage Examples:
1. The erosion has created a fan of scree rapidly encroaching on the Lovers’ walk path.
2. One was protecting individual rights against an encroaching state, the primary defence of rights in the liberal tradition.
3. They were silhouetted on the brow of the hill against a vast pool of light among encroaching black storm clouds.
Word-2: Inequities
Meaning: The quality of being unfair or something that is not fair or equal.
Synonyms: Injustice, unfairness, wrong.
Usage Examples:
1. I overhear two girls talking in utmost seriousness and gravity about the gross inequities in the grading system.
2. There is a simple solution that would correct these inequities and still protect homeowners from excessive taxation.
3. Gift experts say a thoughtful gift balances out inequities in price.
Word-3: Erudite
Meaning: Having or showing a lot of knowledge, esp. from reading and studying.
Synonyms: Knowledgeable, literate, scholarly, brainy, cultivated, educated, highbrow, in the know, into, learned, lettered, etc.
Usage Examples:
1. Women and men sharing the service and much erudite discussion of the Torah text.
2. A very scholarly and erudite work, widely acclaimed at the time but since much maligned. Professional jealousy?
3. These are biographers who are imposingly erudite but never pedantic.
Word-4: Unfounded
Meaning: It is wrong and is not based on facts or evidence.
Synonyms: Baseless, deceptive, fabricated, false, gratuitous, groundless, illogical, misleading, spurious, unjustified, unproven, unsubstantiated, untrue, untruthful, unwarranted, etc.
Usage Examples:
1. She had severe misgivings about the affair, but they proved unfounded.
2. They have been reluctant to admit AIDS patients partly because of unfounded fears of contagion.
3. That Pheidias died in prison under mysterious circumstances, as Plutarch says, is a later and unfounded tradition.
Word-5: Overarching
Meaning: Most important, because of including or affecting all other areas.
Synonyms: Overall throughout, underlying, including, ambient, encircling, enveloping, overshadowing, surrounding.
Usage Examples:
1. Energy security and supply an overarching theme of Russia’s G 8 presidency.
2. Our overarching motivation is to provide enhanced capabilities to the soldier faster.
3. An overarching priority is reinforcing professional staffing, which is much more profitable than clerical staff.
Word-6: Egalitarian
Meaning: Believing that all people are equally important and should have the same rights and opportunities in life.
Synonyms: Democratic, equitable, even-handed, impartial, just, unbiased.
Usage Examples:
1. Egalitarian feminist psychologists draw on feminist and psychological criticisms of gender imbalance among psychologists.
2. The differences between it and traditional and egalitarian feminist approaches are not as significant as they look.
3. Although the relationship is by no means an egalitarian one, it has become more harmonious and more easy-going.
Word-7: Jest
Meaning: Something that is said or done in order to be funny / intended as a joke and not said seriously.
Synonyms: Banter, crack, fun, funny, gag, game, hoax, jive, laugh, one-liner, play, pleasantry, prank, quip, ridicule, sally, spoof, etc.
Usage Examples:
1. His proposal was no jest – he was frank.
2. He lit upon some jest books in the bookstore.
3. Would I jest about something so important?
Word-8: Accrue
Meaning: To increase over a period of time, or to get an amount of something gradually over time.
Synonyms: Accumulate, amass, collect, enlarge, flow, gather, grow, increase, build up.
Usage Examples:
1. Within a few weeks, they accrue a debt that negates the salary their recruiter had promised them.
2. Wisdom does not automatically accrue to individuals because they lived through certain seminal events.
3. Officials say the options will allow investors longer to accrue profits.
Word-9: Nuance
Meaning: A very slight difference in appearance, meaning, sound, etc.
Synonyms: Distinction, gradation, hint, implication, nicety, refinement, subtlety, dash, degree, shade, etc.
Usage Examples:
1. We can use our eyes and facial expressions to communicate virtually every subtle nuance of emotion.
2. Beauty was communication; each mote of light shaded with one nuance of meaning, and each meaning had a colour.
