Article Title: Why war evolved to be a man’s game – and why that’s only now changing

Article Summary

The article is about resilience. Resilient people deal effectively with difficult situations they realize what they can do and what are their limitations, they do not depend on one method and adapt according to the situation. The article discusses the story of Jerry White who lost his foot because of a landmine and later co-founded the International Landmine Survivors Network (since renamed Survivor Corps)and went on to win the Nobel Prize. Rather than seeing themselves as victims of a terrible and mindless fate, resilient people and groups devise ways to frame their misfortune in a more personally understandable way, and this serves to protect them from being overwhelmed by difficulties in the present.

An important factor for resilience is accepting the reality of our situation, even if that situation is frightening or painful and to remain effectively engaged in problem-oriented and goal-directed measures to cope. Another important ingredient is reappraisal that is an assessment of something or someone again or in a different way. Positive reappraisal requires us to find alternative positive meaning for neutral or negative events, situations and/or beliefs. People who are resilient generally meet failure head-on and use it as an opportunity to learn and to self-correct. Humor is another tool which can help us as it broadens our focus, stimulates creativity and flexibility in thinking.
