Parents want their children to learn multiple languages for better career prospects and also because of the greater cognitive skills associated with the learning of languages. In most cases this is not difficult because most children learn at least two or three languages. The language taught at home is different from the language used as the medium of instruction at schools. But how to impart the knowledge of these languages effectively is an important question.
OPOL (One Person One Language) is an approach in which one parent speaks a majority language and the other a minority language, but this method is not ideal because there is a direct correlation between the amount of time spent talking to a child and the success of language acquisition. In the 20th century multilingualism carried a negative connotation but these were mostly because of mutual distrust on the basis of race and colour. The prestige that a language enjoys provides motivation and it’s important that languages too gets accepted for inclusive development. But today multilingualism has become an intensive parenting trend. The biggest benefit of multilingualism is cultural competence and tolerance.
