Jehan Daruvala, the 18-year-old product of Force India Academy, took pole during the qualifying session for Race 1 at the famed Monza Grand Prix circuit in Italy. He is the first Indian to take pole in the F3 European championship, securing the top spot on the starting grid for Race 1. He was not able to transform it into a race victory, and finished second in the race. His Carlin Racing teammate Lando Norris of the UK got the first position. Jehan Daruvala has taken pole position 16 years after Narain Karthikeyan’s pole during the 2000 Macau GP in the British F3 Championship.

The government on Wednesday clarified to the Supreme Court that permanent account number (PAN) will not be invalidated retrospectively for not linking it with Aadhaar. It will be invalid from July 1 , 2017 ,and not when first applied for. In the Finance Act,2017 Aadhaar has been made compulsory for filing income- tax returns. The existing PAN can be declared void, if it is not linked with Aadhaar within the time stipulated by the government. Three pleas challenging the government’s decision to make Aadhaar mandatory for filing income tax returns (ITRs) and PAN are being heard by the court. Members of parliament (MPs) were also questioned by the Supreme Court as to why no objections were filed when the government made Aadhaar mandatory for PAN.

The Japanese award ‘Grand Cordon of the Order of the Rising Sun’ was established in 1875, by Emperor Meiji . The former Law Minister and Senior Supreme Court Lawyer Ashwani Kumar will be the recipient of the Grand Cordon of the Order of the Rising Sun this year, for promoting friendship between the two countries and strengthening ties amongst the two nations. The Grand Cordon of the Order of the Rising Sun is the highest category amongst the Orders of the of the Rising Sun. The award ceremony will be held at the Imperial Palace in Tokyo on May 9.

Mr. Anthony Lianzuala, a 1982-batch Indian Service (ICAS) Officer, took over as the New Controller General of Accounts (CGA) on May 1, 2017. He is the first person from the north-eastern region to hold this position. Mr Lianzuala, a graduate from the Hindu College of Delhi University, has vast and rich experience in the government both at the Centre and the State levels.

The famous Swiss mountaineer Ueli Steck, passed away on 30th April in an accident in Nepal near Mount Everest. He was known for his rapid ascents of the Alps which earned him the nickname the “Swiss Machine”. Steck, at 40 was one of the most celebrated climbers of his generation. He was killed on Sunday after falling to the foot of Mount Nuptse, a smaller peak in the area. He was acclimatizing himself to the altitude before climbing Everest and Lhotse in May. In 2015, Steck decided to climb all 82 peaks in the Alps higher than 4,000m, travelling between mountains by foot, bike and paraglider only. He managed to complete the feat in 62 days, helping cement his reputation.
