Overweening in Context:
In the given context, overweening shows Rupert Mudoch’s influence and how it forced a prime minister to flow out to meet him. Obviously, this word can be negative only. And remember, the word ‘over’ is always used as a negative suffix. For example, the word overbearing. It means ‘having or showing arrogant superiority to and disdain of those one views as unworthy’.

Overweening is somewhat similar to it. It means being arrogant and immoderate, with no consideration for others. Only men with money and power can exhibit such behaviour, isn’t it?

Dictionary definition for Overweening:
1. Presumptuously arrogant; overbearing.
2. Excessive; immoderate: overweening ambition.

The following is an extract from The Guardian used for educational purposes:  ‘Murdoch’s overweening political influence has long been recognised, from well before Tony Blair flew to Australia in 1995 to pay public homage at his corporate court. What has been less well understood is how close-up and personal the pressure exerted by his organisation has been throughout public life.’
