Overweening in Context:
In the given context, overweening is used Rupert Mudoch’s influence and how it forced a prime minister to flow out to meet him. Obviously, this word can be a negative word only. And remember, the word ‘over’ is always used as a negative suffix. For example, the word overbearing. It means ‘having or showing arrogant superiority to and disdain of those one views as unworthy’.

Overweening is somewhat similar to it. It means being arrogant and immoderate, with no considerations for others. Only men with money and power can exhibit such behavior, isn’t it?

Dictionary definition for Overweening:
1. Presumptuously arrogant; overbearing.
2. Excessive; immoderate: overweening ambition.

PLEASE NOTE:

What has been less well understood is how close-up and personal the pressure exerted by his organisation has been throughout public life.’
