Your answers are highlighted below.
Question 1
They pick the flowers fresh every morning.
A
The Fresh flowers are picked every morning by them.
B
The flowers are fresh and picked every morning by them.
C
The flowers are picked fresh every morning by them.
D
The picked flowers are fresh every morning by them.
Question 1 Explanation:
None of the options other than option (c) make sense grammatically. Also, the correct transition of simple past would be ‘are picked’. Also, the subject needs to become the object and vice versa. Keeping both these things in mind, the answer is option (c).
Question 2
Those who worked hard seldom obtained good marks.
A
Good marks were seldom being obtained by those who worked hard.
B
Good marks are seldom obtained by those who worked hard.
C
Seldom had good marks been obtained by those who worked hard.
D
Good marks were seldom obtained by those who worked hard.
Question 2 Explanation:
The tense of the sentence is not past/present perfect or past/present continuous ‘been’ and ‘being’ cannot be used. The sentence is in past tense so option (d) is the most apt choice.
Question 3
You don't need to wind this watch.
A
This watch need not be wound.
B
This watch does not wind.
C
This watch need not be wounded.
D
This watch need not be winded up.
Question 3 Explanation:
The comparative or superlative degree of wind is not wound. So, all the options that have it can be rejected straight out. Option (b) is an absurd sentence doesn’t give us any meaning’ so, it is also eliminated.
Question 4
The cat is running after the rat.
A
The rat was being run after by the cat.
B
The rat is being run after by the cat.
C
The rat is run after by the cat.
D
The cat is being run after by the rat.
Question 4 Explanation:
The sentence is in present continuous form. So being will be included in the conversion. This leaves us with two options to ponder on. As the action in the sentence is being continued, the sentence will have to use is rather than was. So, option (b) would be the correct option.
Question 5
They threw away the Rubbish.
A
The Rubbish will be thrown away.
B
The Rubbish was being thrown away.
C
The Rubbish was thrown away.
D
The Rubbish thrown away.
Question 5 Explanation:
An indefinite or vague pronoun (such as they, we) which is used in the active voice is avoided in passive. There is no need to put the agent with by till the time it doesn’t alter the sense of the sentence. Not being a past continuous sentence, being cannot be used. Also, from past tense the sentence cannot be changed to future as that will change the meaning. Keeping these conditions in mind, the most appropriate choice would be option (c).
