Recommendation 2 from ‘The New York Times’

Article Name:‘Counting by murders’

By: ‘Francisco Toro’

Article states that in Venezuela One hundred fifty-five thousand seven hundred and eighty-eight murders have been committed since 1999. This equals to an attack of the scale of 9/11 every three months. Article states that there is hardly any parallel to draw a comparison to the crime of this scale in human history. Further, article states that this is not the only thing worrisome about the country, infact it is the upward trend in these crimes and article states that there is only one reason for it .i.e. Hugo Chavez has not invested enough in criminal justice system.

Summary:

It is astounding and scary that such kind of violence exists in any country. This means India is in a way better than Venezuela and many other countries in this case. However, worrisome indeed in this case is the fact that criminal justice system is not doing anything about the upward trend in the murders. It seems a genocide is occurring somewhere in the streets of Venezuela everyday.

Recommendation 3 from ‘Foreign Policy’

Article Name:‘A tear in China’s invisibility cloak’

By: ‘Colum Lynch’

The article states that China has always maintained non-meddling position as far as every crisis facing United Nations is concerned. The same stands true for Syrian conflict also and it is China’s and Russia’s stand that is preventing tougher action in Syria. Last time when China vetoed a resolution condemning Syria’s crackdown on demonstrators, it invited criticism from the entire Arab world, as it had backed the resolution. But the time has come that finally Chinese stand is being seen openly as the Chinese fear of losing the Russian support on Iran if it makes the slightest shift in its stand.

Summary:

It can be called diplomacy at its best. China states that it does not want to meddle with the country’s sovereignty. From perspective point of view it is correct, a country’s sovereignty should not be threatened. However, when it comes to crisis of Syrian scale, international community’s tougher stand and tougher action should be pushed not prevented by below standards diplomatic stand.
