Recommendation 1 from ‘Foreign Policy’

Article Name:‘The case of superman underwear’

By: ‘Karl Sharpo’

The article elaborates on a funny incident that happened in Lebanon. And the article states that instead of engaging in the struggle for freedom amidst huge censorship, Lebanon is coming to terms with an incident where two actors Edmund Hedded and actress Rawya al-Chab will face a court of appeal to defend themselves against charges of breaching public morals and inciting debauchery. What was their fault? They both were part of the show which auctioned men for charity and in the process Hedded also flashed a few inches of his Superman boxer shorts. This event was then reported in a newspaper, written totally in the opposite way for which the event was made. And authorities who seemed to have no other important work initiated investigation into it.

Superman underwear seems to be a symbol of oppressive censorship that Lebanon is being subjected to. So in the similar way anything that is symbolic of free speech should also stay behind the closed doors. Further, article correctly states that as if the authorities had nothing important in the strife ridden country that it initiated such an irrelevant investigation.

Recommendation 2 from ‘The Guardian’

Article Name:‘Why I’m leading the march of Italy’s recession widows’

By: ‘Tiziana Marrone’

The article narrates the story of a widow who lost her husband to recession. Her husband set himself on fire outside tax office because he was driven to desperation as he had been in debt for a bit too long. Now with others, this woman, writer of the article is organising a non-political demonstration to tell the world that economy is killing people and people cannot take it anymore. She states that march is to tell people that government is doing what it can to save itself, but not the people. March is on this Friday at 4pm.

Article is nothing, but a slap on our faces where we are so busy with our lives that we do not see the pain of others. She is not the only one suffering, struggling to make ends meet, but there are countless others too who are slowly perishing under the weight of the declining economy. Perhaps we all can demonstrate this in our parts too.

Recommendation 3 from ‘The Times of India’

Article Name:‘No more smokescreens’

By: ‘TOI’

The article talks about halting of the warning scrolls against smoking on cinema screens, which it states is a positive move. Article states that the scrolls and smokescreens not only hinder the rich visual craft that films are, but also limits the artistic freedom. Further, banning smoking on the screens will not make the problem of smoking go away. Government should focus campaigns specifically designed towards the aim of people quitting smoking.

As far as hindering visual craft is concerned, it is not that much an issue, as it just takes away the attention of the viewer for a while. But restricting artistic freedom is definitely one issue that has been addressed with it.
