Recommendation 1 from ‘The The NY Times’

Article Name:‘Facebook is urging members to add organ donor status’

By: ‘Matt Richtel and Kevin Sack’

Facebook announced on Tuesday morning a plan to encourage everyone on Facebook to start advertising their donor status. Facebook hopes that this move will encourage more people to enrol themselves in the organ donor’s list. This move has been made by Facebook, in the hope of lowering the deaths that occur in America due to want of organs. One of the doctors has also touted this move as the historic one in organ donation and he sates that millions of people could change their donor status overnight. Further, Facebook is also introducing this move in United Kingdom.

Summary:

This is one of a kind move in the social networking industry. Facebook is using its wide reach to do the thing that no one has ever been able to do. Hospitals advertise for organ donations and despite that less than half of Americans have registered as organ donors, but with this move, the number could really double.

Recommendation 2 from ‘The NY Times’

Article Name:‘Just say no: No science, no sex, no gay people’

By: ‘Andrew Rosenthal’

The article talks about Tenessee legislature’s attempt to draft two bills .i.e. a bill to protect teachers who preach the scientific weakness of biological evolution and another bill that would prohibit teachers from mentioning the existence of homosexuality. Writer mentions that with republican majority, the bill has already been sent to the governor. Writer also states that this bill is nothing but a disaster in the making, as the laws are so vaguely written that if a teacher does not stop one person from sitting in another person’s lap then he/she could face the wrath. Further, they will also have to endorse abstinence.

Summary:

Ridiculous! Who has engrained in their heads that they can bring in morality and stop teenage pregnancies etc. by legislating almost everything under the sun. Where people should be working to make a liberal society, so that such issues can be discussed openly, they go ahead and shoot themselves in the foot with such laws.

Recommendation 3 from ‘The Independent’

Article Name:‘What is really happening in Burma today?’

By: ‘Nancy Hudson-Rodd’

The article states that despite so much euphoria over Burma, the real big picture is dismal. Writer states that agents of capitalism .i.e. scholars, diplomats etc. are robbing people of Burma under the veil of development and democratic change. Further, the state civilian government is being supported by people who have economic interests in Burma. Writer states that there is a word that Burma could benefit from international aid just like Cambodia. Yet, even in the case of Cambodia, people needing aid have not received it.. Everyone seems to be talking about business opportunities in Burma and not the basic changes in societies in terms of heath etc. So, the writer feels that Burma needs to be written about even more.

Summary:

Well, yes, there have been articles and articles about how democratic change is nothing, but a sham and here is another one. And, it might as well be true. Democratic change even in the name of it means place is opening up to change, which may be good for the economic purposes. And it becomes obvious that this change will be exploited to its best by the people who are only after business opportunities.
