The businessman from Uruguay and the businessman in Room no. 106 together own 40 cars in total. Let the businessmen who have donated to 8 institutions in the last year be ‘x’. Let the businessman in Room no. 106 be ‘y’

Step 2: The businessman from Algeria owns 8 cars less than the businessman from Scotland but donated to 10 more institutions in the last year. The businessman in Room No. 103 owns 12 cars and donated to 8 institutions in the last year. The Belgium businessman is staying two rooms ahead of the Scotland businessman who is staying two rooms ahead of the USA businessman.

However, in exams, it is advisable to look through the questions and its options to chalk out some additional information which might be helpful in solving problems. From information 7, the occupant of room number 103 owns 12 cars and he donated to 8 institutions. Then from information 3, the occupant of room number 102 must be having 24 cars. From information 6, the occupant of room number 104 must be having ‘z’ number of cars and donated to y number of institutions, where 4z < y. From information 9, the occupant of room number 105 owns 8 cars and if the businessman from USA donated to ‘x’ number of institutions, then the occupant of room number 105 must have donated to (x – 2) number of institutions. From information 10, the residents of USA, Scotland and Belgium are staying in alternate rooms in that order, starting from left. Though room numbers of residents of USA, Scotland and Belgium can also be 102, 104 and 106 respectively. But from question 80 we can conclude that room numbers are 101, 103, and 105 respectively as room number 106 is not given to Belgium businessman. Although the nationality of the occupant of room number 106 is not known from the information given, it can be found out to be Jamaica from the options of the 3rd question in the set.
