1. Rajiv Gauba appointed as Union Home Secretary.

  • Rajiv Gauba on August 31 took charge as the Union Home Secretary after superannuation of incumbent Rajiv Mehrishi.
  • Interestingly, Rajiv Mehrishi appointed as Comptroller and Auditor General of India.

2. Kokani writer Mahabaleshwar Sail receives 2016 Saraswati Samman.

  • Prominent Konkani writer Mahabaleshwar Sail was presented with the Saraswati Samman 2016 for his Novel ‘Hawthan’.
  • The novel published in 2009, captures cultural lives of traditional pottery community in Goa.

3. Rajeev Kumar takes charges as NITI Aayog Vice Chairman.

  • Economist Rajeev Kumar took over as Vice Chairman of government think tank NITI Aayog. He replaced Arvind Panagariya, an Indian-American economist who left the think tank to return academia.
  • Interestingly, PM Narendra Modi is the Chairman of NITI Aayog.

International News

1. Iraq plans to restore air service to Russia after 13 years.

  • Iraqi airways plans to resume flying between Baghdad and Moscow after 13-year break.
  • Flights between Russia and Iraq ceased at the start of the US military operation against the Saddam Hussain regime.

2. International Hindu conference begins in Nepal.

  • The three-day International Hindu Conference began with an aim of reinstating Kathmandu as the global capital of Hinduism.
  • Hindu scholars, religious leaders, Hindu activists and officials from different countries including India, Bangladesh, Pakistan, the US and the UK are attending the conference with the theme of ‘Emerging spiritualism: Renaissance of Hinduism’

3. ISIS chief Baghdadi likely still alive: US general.

  • Elusive Islamic State leader Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi is probably still alive and likely hiding in the Middle Euphrates River Valley, a senior US general said.
  • With a USD 25 million US bounty on his head, Iraq-born Baghdadi has successfully avoided an intense effort to seek him out for six years or more.

4. US bans its citizens from travelling to N Korea.

  • The United States banned its citizens from travelling to N Korea months after death of an American student who had been imprisoned in the country for 17 months.
  • Notably, violators of this ban could face 10 years imprisonment.

Business News

1. Swede’s ‘saab’ to tie up with Adani group to make fighter jets in India.

  • Sweden’s Saab will tie up with India’s Adani Group to bid for a contract to make fighter aircraft in India.
  • The partnership will compete with US defence giant Lockheed Martin in a two horse-race to equip the Indian military with single-engine jets to be produced locally under Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s “Make-in-India” initiative.

2. Reliance Foundation awarded with Prestigious Rashtriy Khel Protsahan Puraskar.

  • The Reliance Foundation was rewarded with the prestigious Rashtriya Khela Prostahan Award at Rashtrapati Bhavan.
  • This was awarded for its contribution to the promotion of sports.

3. Rajiv Mehrishi appointed as Comptroller and Auditor General of India.

  • Retired Union Home secretary Rajiv Meharishi was appointed as Comptroller and Auditor General(CAG) of India.
  • Rajiv Meharshi will replace Shashikant Sharma as a 13th CAG of India.

Sports News

1. India post their biggest ODI win in SL, take 4-0 series lead.

  • With the help of centuries of Captain Virat and Vice captain Rohit, India defeated SL by 168 runs in Colombo.
  • Notably, this was 300th ODI of former Indian Captain MS Dhoni.

2. Virat Kohli scored highest runs in ODIs in 2017.

  • Indian Captain Virat Kohali became the leading ODI run scorer this year.
  • Kohli who has scored 907 runs this year, overtook S Africa’s Faf du Plessis, who has 814 runs in 2017.

3. India wins Bronze at World Boxing Championships.
