1. Respect and execute verdict on SYL canal: Supreme Court

  • The water sharing issue of Sutlej-Yamuna began when Haryana was carved out of Punjab in 1966.
  • The states were required to construct their portions within their territories for effective allocation of water.
  • Issues began when Punjab stopped the canal construction after initial phase.

2. Supplies dry up in Darjeeling Hills

  • The indefinite strike in the Darjeeling hills has reached 27th day. All the essential supplies have dried up.
  • The residents are hoping for betterment in situation from the all-party meeting convened by Gorkha Janmukti Morcha(GJM).

3.No GST on free food served at religious institutions

  • Free food supplied at anna kshetras and prasadams at religious institutions will attract nil CGST/SGST/IGST.
  • However, inputs and input services required for making prasadams are subject to GST.

4. Rare portrait of Gandhi auctioned for 32,500 pounds

  • The sketch shows Gandhi writing with a look of intense concentration, seated on the floor and is inscribed by him with the words “Truth is God/MK Gandhi/4.12.’31”
  • The pencil portrait is one of the many portraits created by artist John Henry.

International News

1. 78 Indians released by Pakistan return to India

  • The Indian fishermen were arrested in May last year when their boats entered Pakistan’s waters in an area of the Arabian Sea where they were caught by the coast guards.
  • Pakistan handed over the 78 prisoners to the Border Security Force(BSF).

2. Victory in Mosul

  • Iraq’s Prime Minister Haider-al-Abadi declared total victory in Mosul after a prolonged battle since October last year.
  • The fight killed thousands and displaced nearly 900,000 from their homes.

3.Indian-American to head Office of Information and Regulatory Affairs

  • The US Senate confirmed Indian-American lawyer Neomi Rao by a vote of 54-41 as the head of White House’s Office of Information and Regulatory Affairs
  • She would lead White House Office overseeing regulations.

Business News

1. Microsoft working to make a positive impact in the world

  • Indian-American CEO Satya Nadella said Microsoft is not only building IT solutions , it is also working to make a positive impact in the world.
  • Microsoft partners employ 17 million people around the world and the company has 64,000 partners working in cloud services.
  • He announced the launch of Microsoft 365 adding that this along with LinkedIn Business Solutions, can redefine what customers can expect from their business applications.

2. Relief for Tatas

  • The Bombay High Court rules that it cannot hear a suit filed by minority shareholders of the group seeking Rs.41,000 crore in damages.
  • The damages sought are for losses due to a drop in the share prices of eight firms since the market closing on October 24,2016.

3. Sensex climbs fresh peak at 31,802.03; Nifty tops 9,800

  • The flagship Sensex moved to a fresh all-time high of 31,802 .
  • Rising for the second straight day, the 30-share index rose by 86.39 points.

Sports News
1.Nadal exits Wimbledon 2017

  • French Open Champion Rafael Nadal lost against Luxembourg’s Gilles Muller.
  • Muller will face Marin Cillic in the quarter-finals.

2.No decision on new Team India coach yet, says BCCI

  • The BCCI on Tuesday denied reports of Ravi Shastri being named as the head coach of Team India, saying the the Cricket Advisory Committee (CAC) is still deliberating over the decision.
  • Earlier it was wildly reported in the media that former India allrounder and captain Shastri, who was team director of the Indian men’s cricket team from August 2014 to April 2016, has been appointed as head coach for a two-year period until the end of the 2019 ICC World Cup.
