National News

1.Milk production up 20% in 2014-17.

• According to Minister of Agriculture and Farmers’ Welfare Radha Mohan Singh, Milk production in the country increased by 20% from 137.7 million tonnes to 165.4 million tonnes between 2014 and 2017.
• Also, the per capita availability of milk has risen by 15.6 percent from 307 gms a day to 355 gms per day between 2013-14 and 2016-17.

2.Floating Lab set up to monitor Manipur’s Loktak lake.

• The Institute of Bio-resources and Sustainable Laboratory(IBSD), Imphal, set up a floating laboratory in northeast India’s largest freshwater lake Loktak to constantly monitor its water quality and eventually improve it.
• The laboratory was inaugurated by Manipur’s Forest and Environment Minister, Thounaojam Shyamkumar Singh in Imphal.

3.India and France pledge to build world’s largest nuclear plant.

• PM Narendra Modi and French President Emmanuel Macron pledged to begin work on “the largest nuclear power plant in the world” in India by this year.
• Urging Electricite de France SA and India’s Nuclear Power Corporation to accelerate discussions on a contract and start work at Maharashtra’s Jaitapur, the leaders said the plant would have a 9.6 GW capacity.

4.Mere weapon seizure doesn’t link person to murder: Hyderabad HC.

• The Hyderabad High Court has held that a weapon’s seizure from a person cannot link them to a murderer unless a link between the two is established.
• The court was hearing a plea by a man convicted of murdering someone he had loaned money to. While the weapon was seized from him, it wasn’t sent to a forensic lab.

International News

1.India and France inked 14 pacts.

• India and France have inked 14 pacts in key areas of defence, security, nuclear energy and protection of classified information besides resolving to deepen cooperation in the Indo-Pacific region and set up joint efforts to contain terrorism.
• The agreements were signed keeping in mind the changing security dynamics in the Indian Ocean and pacific.

2.Lashkar-e-taiba splits due to financial crunch.

• Pakistan-based militant outfit Lashkar-e-Taiba has split into two due to financial crisis caused by the ban on 26/11 Mumbai attack mastermind Hafiz Saeed’s organisations, reports said.
• Maulana Amir Hamza has split from the terror group and formed a new outfit named Jaish-e-Manqafa. The ban reportedly forced Hamza to mobilise funds through his new outfit.

3.Bangladesh plane carrying 71 people crashes at Nepal airport.

• Several people are feared to be dead after a US-Bangla Airlines plane crashed during landing at the Tribhuvan International Airport in Kathmandu, Nepal.
• All the operations have been halted at the airport ad rescue teams have been deployed.

4.Won’t give back Crimea to Ukraine: Putin.

• Russian President Vladimir Putin has said that he will not give back Crimea to Ukraine under any circumstances.
• Russia had annexed the Crimean Peninsula from Ukraine in 2014 following which pro-Russian separatists took control over the Donetsk and Luhansk regions.

Business News
1.Sensex records biggest 1-day gain in over a year.

• Benchmark index BSE Sensex surged 610.8 points at 33,917, posting its biggest one-day gain in nearly 17 months.
• The NSE Nifty also gained 194.55 points. The biggest gainers on both the indices were Bharti Airtel, NTPC and ITC.

2.Telecom, power contributed to bad loans problem: Chidambaram.

• Telecom and power sectors contributed to the bad loans problems, former Finance Minister P Chidambaram said.
• He also said that new jobs were not created as there were no additional private investments.

3.Khadi industry lost 7 lakh jobs.

• The govt informed the parliament that the number of people employed in the Khadi sector fell from 11.6 lakh to 4.6 lakh in the last two financial years.
• However, the production of Khadi increased by 31.6% and sales grew by 33% during the period.

4.Women make up only 22% of boards of largest US firm: Report.

• According to a Bank of America Merrill Lynch report, the average board of the 500 largest US companies currently has a representation of only 22%, up from 14% in 2008.
• The report further added that 11% off companies have at least one-third of board seats held by women, only 1% have half or more board seats filled by women.

Sports News
1.Rabada takes wicket every 39 balls.

• Kagiso Rabada has now a Test bowling strike-rate of 38.9, the best by any bowler with 100-plus wickets in 122 years.
• England’s George Lohmann has the best strike-rate of 34.1 in Test cricket history.

2.Pooja Vastrakar, 1st woman to score 50 while batting at no.9.

• 18-year-old Pooja Vastrakar became the first woman in the ODI history to score 50 while batting at number nine or lower, after registering a 56-ball 5 against Australia.
• Pooja was the highest run-getter and scored with the highest strike rate in the Indian innings, which ended at 200/10, playing in only her second ODI.
